Jonny now has full Regular Commission which entitles him to remain serving until retirement age at 60, not when he is 50.

When an officer commissions it is on a Short Service Commission, usually from 6-12 years

To progress and stay beyond this they must undertake study, training and apply to convert to Intermediate Regular Commission sometime during their first 6 years of service. If they are assessed as with potential and suitable, it will be granted and they will then be entitled to serve for up to 15 years service.

During this period, and again after study, exams, training, and positive continual assessment, they can apply for Regular Commission which entitles them to serve until retirement - if they wish. Achieving Regular Commission is quite difficult and the assessment is quite rigourous. There are limited places for senior officers in the Army so only the best are accepted for Reg Commission.

Jonny converted to IRC at the end of 2010, and became a Career Officer with Regular Commission at the end of 2016.
All of this sounds like such a dreadfully challenging and difficult task to reach the military service levels he has attained. Quite an accomplishment and learning all of this only makes him stand even taller in our eyes! Three cheers for Jonny!

I hope learning this sort of thing about Jonny isn’t too boring. It’s meant to bring a greater understanding of him; that he isn’t just a pretty face, that there is much more to him that most don’t see, or probably, care about.

He has worked hard, and where he is today is testament to his hard work as well as his personality. His parents and mentors are to be commended for the way he was nurtured and guided.

A tiny private snippet that illustrates the sort of values he grew up with - his mum was in a local shop and someone tapped her on the shoulder and said to her, “You must be very proud of your son”. Without missing a beat she smiled and said, “which one?”.

That sort of shared value for all those you love … everyone, regardless of position, power, or popularity, is uncommon these days and seems to have been passed on to Jonny.

However, before we all pop him on too high a pedestal of perfection, I’m reliably informed he definitely has his faults, as we all do.

Thank you for your post. Not boring at all, it's fascinating for us who are Constitutional Monarchists and care about the Royal Family, not interested in Celebrity. It's certainly not just because he is handsome we swoon for Jonny, but the kind of person he is, the caring way he ushered Prince George up the step to the Abbey for the Coronation and looked after all the pages, the touching way he gave Prince Louis the picture back to show a little girl at Sandringham last Christmas (when he must've been missing his own son the same age). The way he said "Sor-ry" to the crowd in Manchester thinking he was getting in the way of their taking pics of the King. We've heard first hand reports from those who have met him how polite and charming he is...with a firm handshake!
I could go on, but most of us, I imagine, are mature women who just enjoy the Ray of Sunshine his smile brings on HM's engagements as an extra bonus, so will miss Jonny when he's gone. He's been there, unflappable, at tumultuous events in our nation's history, and will be remembered.
Ofcourse nobody is perfect, he wouldn't be human. But he doesn't show that side to him to the wider world, it is saved for the lucky people who really know him.

Not at all boring but fascinating. The initial interest was most likely, “Who is this tall, dark, handsome Equerry in that incredibly detailed and beautiful RRoS uniform” but for so many of us in this forum, it has evolved into something much more … An opportunity to share excitement about the King’s events and watching Jonny work alongside him; seeing what Jonny does at work and how he goes about it. We are also learning bits and pieces about the inner workings of the Royal Household, equerries and the military.

Each member of the RF has carved out their own unique niche along with a core of loyal followers. Jonny has, knowingly or not, carved out his own unique niche along with his own core of loyal followers. He has been embraced by the public who see him as playing a role of high value within the inner workings of the Royal Family. The trick is to honour his off-duty privacy and focus on his Royal public duties; to continue to learn more about the entire process of Monarchy-Military-Equerry of which he is now an integral part both behind the scenes and in the public eye. That he has attracted and continues to hold the public’s attention speaks volumes about him in the most positive of ways (that I have mentioned in earlier posts) … Military officer, demonstrated strong core values, immaculate appearance, perfect deportment and pleasant facial expressions all within the mysterious settings of the Monarchy.

You have kindly shared a few “behind the public curtain” tidbits with us and we enjoy them all and would love to hear more as you permit and feel are appropriate. Yes, no one likes to think of their chosen favorite as imperfect but realistically we understand there is also a private side to Jonny’s life that we, while curious, have no need to know unless permitted.

In photographs he seems to completely adore her. How lovely it was for her to invite him to dinner as he described in an interview. I wonder what our late Queen thought of him ... well and with affection, I hope.

One of the things I noticed from when he first went viral was the amount of overseas “fans” who knew nothing about the workings of the RF. They were amazed with how the RF walked about and shook hands, received gifts, laughed and spoke to the waiting crowd. The more they looked for sightings of Jonny the more they saw the work of the RF. They commented on the amount of visits made to charities, and other good causes the more they looked the more information they wanted. So in his own way with his thousands of fans he has really opened a lot of eyes on how hard the RF work and the amount events are covered weekly. I’m sure, like the rest of us, he has his faults but he brings a high level of professionalism to his work and the fact that he is tall and handsome is a definite plus also that he wears the uniform of the RRoS magnificently. He certainly is very easy on the eye.

These are screenshots from a video when Jonny was in either 3 or 4 Scots before he joined Balaklava Company marching through Stirling having been given the Freedom of the City to the RR of S, starting from Stirling Castle to the City Council. I think it was 2012, when he would've been 29, but as you can see, Jonny has grown more handsome with the passing of years.

Does anyone know what this Uniform is Jonny is wearing here? And what is the stick under his arm for? I know he's giving permission for the Pipe Major to march off from a previous Lonach Gathering (possibly 2019, I took the screenshot from the video) but I've never Jonny wearing this uniform before.

This is the "Dress Blue Patrol" uniform and I believe it is only worn after 1800 Hours. It is the Scotts Patrol Jacket, tartan trews, boots (not brogues) and Regimental cane. The Regimental Cane is only carried by commissioned Officers and I believe it is a symbol of authority. I do not know exactly for what type of activities this uniform is worn. This jacket is actually my favorite of all of the uniforms we have seen Jonny sporting during Royal events. Well, I love him most in his military camo because it makes him look like the "action man" that he is!

It looks like Jonny was already a Captain!

:hbeat: A humble thank you but I cannot take credit ... I have a secret source of information that I am going to share with you. The link is below. This is the Royal Regiment of Scotland's "Dress Regulations" Manual. It contains everything you might want to know (and things you did not know you needed to know) about ALL of the uniform bits and pieces issued and worn by the RRoS ... what it is called ... what it consists of ... who is qualified to wear what ... where it is worn ... Etc. It is flooded with color photographs!

I'll send you more information in another reply but let's be sure this link works first!

Now that I know the first link works, here is the BIG link. It's the Royal Regiment of Scotland's website. Click on "Publications" and when you land on that page, click on "Other". You will be amazed by the amount of information available for download including the steps for the Ghillies Ball reels:panic:

Also click on "Gallery" and then "Ceremonial". As you scroll through the pictures you will see Jonny again in three of the photos.

I am curious to know why Jonny is not featured in a "Gallery" photo during the Coronation!

Enjoy your evening reading!!!!
