i am a big purchase person. I would save up and buy something nice or nag hubby to buy me somethinig nice combining all the occassions into one. i think every woman should have:

1) a classic watch
2) diamond stud earrings
3) a simple everyday necklace, like a diamond cross or circle-keep it simple
4) layering necklaces like david yurmans
5) a middle finger ring
ITA with this. my gran is the jewellery person in our family and she has tought me that holding out and saving for something classic and timeless is the best option.
catabie, i would add pearls to your list and then its perfect.

I'm more likely to save for a larger piece than buy several trinkets. There's a journey bangle I've been lusting over. I've never seen anyone with it, and it's gorgeous and matches my journey necklace. I will buy the occasional pretty gold piece, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

I told my DH that I posted this thread (he just rolled his eyes) but just now, he gave me "a small trinket" A necklace! Said there's no reason why women shouldn't have both, big and little!

Thanks everyone for posting.

I have a bunch of trinket jewelry. But there are pieces I think every woman should splurge on:

- the beautiful, timeless watch (for me, that's one <or two, or three :p> Cartier watches)

- diamond stud earrings

- pearl necklace

I absolutely agree. These are the basics to splurge on and you'll get the most usage from these things more than anything.

I don't think there is a list of jewelry (or clothing) 'staples' or 'musthaves' that every woman should own - you should buy what YOU will wear and what flatters YOU best.

That said, I don't wear a lot of jewelry -only a wedding ring and earrings and I will always hold out and save up for the best earrings I can afford because I don't wear costume jewelry at all and I hate cheap jewelry.

I'd go with the one big purchase. A few months ago I splurged on some Tiffany diamond studs. I could have used that money to buy lots (tons) of cheaper jewelry but it feels so much better to wear platinum set diamonds.
