Are you referring to the shape or the chevron quilting? They all copy each other...I think they're Chanel inspired with the chevron quilting. Here is a vintage Chanel tote bag from the 90's: https://www.tradesy.com/i/chanel-chevron-black-caviar-shoulder-bag/21001356/

Lol I guess Chanel isn’t the only brand that Rebecca Minkoff copies from...

I can’t even tell you how often Coach copies from LV. Don’t know why when they had a look of their own to begin with. Really turned me off to the brand when I noticed that.

Seems like every maker has at least one Chanel knockoff in their line. And at least one riff on a Speedy and the Alma.

on the other hand, if it gives people the opportunity to own a style they couldn't afford in the higher end brand - and if it's good quality - then there's that

I totally agree with @sdkitty. Brands like RM or Coach will still have a very reasonable price while still getting quality leathers. A bag sets you back a couple of hundred. If you look at premier designers like LV or Chanel, a bag will set you back thousands. Even while saving up that is still not in everybody's ballpark. When the funds are there, not everybody wants to wear a bag that costs the same as a car.

Logomania is also a thing. Do I like the model of a Speedy or a Pochette Metis? Absolutely. But rather without the Vuitton logo in plain black. The c clasp of the Cassie is a lot more understated while the model is the same. I already mentioned the difference in price. And unlike some models from premier brands, I can buy a bag online and there is no wait-list.

Full knock-offs are not okay. The bags that look identical to the real deal, including branding. The ones you buy cheap and are made cheap. But my wallet does agree with dupes. High street bags won't last a lifetime. Premier designers are not in my price range. I don't see any harm in middle of the road options.

there was someone who posted here on the RM forum comparing a RM bag to a similar Chanel (which the poster had)....she said the RM was very nice leather.....so credit where credit is due. also, where RM does do "inspired by" bags, she has also come up with her own popular designs (MA, etc)

I think the Chanel comparison was not from the poster herself, it was mentioned by Autumn Beckman in one of her Edie reviews. Once returned Edie because I thought that for once I should do the sensible thing and not buy another black bag. The leather did feel thick and sturdy. Skippers regret is a thing and the bag that looked like it didn't survive the summer, so that was the last time I was sensible regarding a bag

I also agree that RM does her own designs too, and they are very nice. But I am not so familiar with the history of the brand. I know that the MAB, Nikki and MAC's go way back but I feel to much of a newbie to talk about those. My first RM bag was a Love and the last bag I bought was a Love in another color, so off course I'm biased regarding dupes. The quality of the leather and the price of the bags is what made me stick to the brand.

here is the post I was thinking of: (by @samfalstaff )

Just took mine out. It's very cushy and somewhat soft. I hadn't made the comparison to Chanel caviar leather, but there is a pebbled texture to the Edie. Here's the Edie next to the caviar. The caviar is slightly softer, but they share the same feel in "puffiness" - not sure if that's a word...Anyway, looking forward to when I can use this bag. It's the smaller version so more of a date/dinner bag.

I completely forgot about this post, where did my mind go?

I can, and do, but preloved LVs all the time for the same or less than the price of a real Coach, RM or MK...not an inferior quality outlet bag. Especially if you buy in Epi leather (no logos on them). The quality is better and I can use it for as long as I want and sell it for at least what I paid for it, if not more. Can’t do that with any of those brands...
Why wouldn’t I buy a bag from the maker who actually designed it then, instead of a dupe?

interesting
I'm not knowledgeable about LV but I think if I were to buy a bag I'd prefer epi leather....more subtle and elegant than a coated canvas logo bag

You can get Epi leather Speedies for $250-350. Other Epi styles for even less. I have seen Epi Almas for $400 and under. Epi leather is lightweight and very durable. Was designed to travel well.

What I didn't say in that mini review is that Chanel quality with respect to leather feel has gone downhill for some bags. The older lambskin used to be butter soft, but now it feels almost like rubber in comparison. I have two Chanel WOCS - one from many years ago and the other relatively new. The newer one has that rubber-feel while the older one feels lovely. That said, the Chanel wallet in question was very soft and puffy so RM has stepped up its game. I also didn't mention that Chanel still wins when it comes to the details like the stitching and hardware (at least for the newer bags).

Maybe the leather used for the Edie bags is slightly better than other RMs. I have a grey Love bag that looks beautiful but feels like old fake leather. Not soft at all, but I still love the look of it. And I doubt I would replace it with a grey Boy.
