Leaving bangles on vs. taking them off at end of day

Do you wear your bangle with a clasp all the time or do you take it off at the end of the day?

I think people are so worried about clasps being damaged that they forget that wearing it 24/7 is even worse for wear and tear. When people shower with fine jewelry, all kinds of soap scum, dirt, dust, etc. gets trapped in the grooves and wears out the entire piece. I’d rather get clasps replaced than to wear out the entire item. It’s also cleaner not to wear it all the time. Wearing pieces to bed can result in warped shapes. I always take everything off when I get home to prolong the life of the piece.

This is a good viewpoint, thank you!

I don’t do it as soon as I come home but I do as soon as I pass through my bedroom. I’m very absent minded so I don’t trust myself to remember where I put my jewelry if I don’t make it a habit of it only ever being on me or in my jewelry box.

I don’t find bangles to be the most comfortable things to sleep in, so I usually take them off. Same deal with cuffs. I take them off, since they’re not the most comfortable.

However, I do wear bracelets to bed, since they’re softer and more conforming to the body. I’ll also wear necklaces and rings to bed, but it depends on the piece. If it’s a long medallion, a big ring, or a piece featuring delicate gemstones, I’ll take it off before bed.

For a few years, I would always remove my jewelry as soon as I got home. And then I would choose new pieces when I woke up and knew I was leaving the house. But now, I’m much less consistent, ahahaha… Nowadays, I’ll choose a set of jewelry to wear basically 24/7 for a week or two, and then I’ll change out all my pieces for something in a different color metal.

This shift in my jewelry hygiene started when the quarantine was lifted and we could travel again. I would wear my jewelry pieces for a trip. Then, I couldn’t be bothered with taking on and off my jewelry, because I had fears of my pieces being lost, misplaced, or stolen. I got used to sleeping in my pieces and wearing them about. And now, my travel habits have bled into my normal life.

In some ways, I obviously get a lot more wear out of my pieces, since I get to wear them around the home. You could say I’m enjoying my pieces more.

In other ways, I am aware that poor jewelry hygiene leads to excessive wear and tear — especially when I’m asleep. For me, I feel like this potential damage is somewhat mitigated, since I rotate my pieces.

Even though I get to wear my jewelry more often, I notice that it hasn’t translated into my pieces being showcased evenly. I used to put a lot of effort into rotating through all my pieces when I would choose my daily jewelry. Nowadays, I no longer wear a lot of my more delicate, temperamental, or uncomfortable pieces. It’s been maybe over a year since I last wore pearls, semi-precious stones, or silver. It’s been several months since I last wore a bangle or cuff. I also haven’t worn a brooch in a long, long time.

Anyway, all this is to say that your poll is interesting, because the changes to my jewelry wearing habits have definitely affected the jewelry that I put on my body. Basically all my jewelry has to be gold/platinum. And I have to have diamonds featured somewhere on the piece, or else I get worried about hyper-visible scratches. Whereas wearability has always played an important role in my jewelry buying calculus, wearability has become an even more important aspect to me now that I wear jewelry to bed. If I start wearing bangles again, I wonder if I will transition back to removing my jewelry every day.

My jewelry makes me happy so I wear it all the time. How can soap and water damage gold and diamonds? lol The strongest material can be damaged by soap? Come on. I just clean it when I feel like there’s not enough shine. And no I do not obsess over clasps and etc, these items are made to be enjoyed.
You’re welcome to wear your jewelry 24/7. But there are plenty of websites that indicate that it’s best not to wear 24/7. Of course, mild soap is fine to use to clean jewelry, but daily exposure to various chemicals, hand sanitizer, etc. can strip a layer off the gold and dull the metal and diamonds. Dirt and dust and dead skin cells do get trapped in the tiny grooves and can loosen stones if the jewelry is not cleaned regularly. Prongs can get damaged or loosened with daily, 24/7 wear. Here’s one website I found but there are plenty of websites that say this.

Everything gets dirty, clothes, skin, hair. What now not living at all? When jewelry gets dirty I clean it or take it to a jeweler. Simple as that.

If diamonds get dull and you can’t clean them, they’re not diamonds.

I do agree that gunk getting into your stone settings will loosen them. I use an ultrasonic cleaner regularly because I hope to prevent that from happening. I still clean certain things with warm water and Dawn dish soap, but find that the ultrasonic cleaner really gets in there. Be careful what you put in an ultrasonic cleaner though!
