Thanks for the responses ladies . . . I may work up enoug h courage to apply for a job at Coach now.;)
Do not even be intimidated....I am a Coach store manager, (soon to be retired) and all you have to do is apply!!! Yes of course we do background checks....that's common sense, but it is not a big deal I have a new employee of 3 months now, she and her husband have seperated and were going through a bankruptcy, I still hired her. We look for CRIMINAL activity, I would hire someone with not great credit before I would hire a convicted Felon. Good Luck.

don't credit checks, etc depend on the position you're applying for? like, for a part time sa, it may not really matter...but for a manager, they look at that sort of thing.

Bethy - it may very well vary from state to state. In PA (where I am) it is legal (and federally, it is legal), but states can always afford more protection to their residents than the federal gov't does, so it is possible that one state makes it illegal while others do allow it.

kallison -it would depend more on the company than the position. For example, a long time ago, I worked for a banking company, but I was in a sales division that had nothing to do with money - we didn't handle money, we didn't have access to financial records, etc. However, the company drug tested all employees regardless of the position they held.

^I think it may be a state to state basis, I know in Illinois working in HR you could only ask certain questions when asking for references, but then other states could ask anything they wanted.... (We would receive faxes for references from other states and it would have ?s we couldn't answer.)

As far as our background checks, at the company I was at we only screened for a criminal background, but I'm not sure whether there was anything prohibiting credit checks in Illinois or not... Personally, if someone was working in certain types of positions (i.e. positions of a financial or consultant nature), I think it makes sense to have a credit check... but I guess I'm saying too much by saying that...

In Illinois at least it used to be a general rule that if you handled cash in your job you had to be "bonded". You signed an authorization for the bonding company to check your credit. It's been a long time since I changed jobs, but I'm assuming most companies would still have that or something similar as a requirement for anyone who handles cash or credit cards.

From thefreedictionary.com: Bond - written guaranty or pledge which is purchased from a bonding company (usually an insurance firm) or by an individual as security (called a "bondsman") to guarantee some form of performance, including showing up in court ("bail bond"), properly complete construction or other contract terms ("performance bond"), that the bonded party will not steal or mismanage funds, that a purchased article is the real thing, or that title is good. If there is a failure then the bonding company will make good up to the amount of the bond.

It is true.
Last March, I had an interview at the Coach outlet nearby and got the job.
But, because Corporate in NY did a credit check and I did not have perfect credit at the time, they denied me the position!:crybaby:

Oh well, I still go in there and they are super great to me!

Maybe it differs from state to state which was already posted. My friend also had the job and the manager was looking forward to working with her but when the application was forwarded to Corp. She was very sorry to inform her that she could not hire her. She had no criminal history.

In any case like handbglvr we go in there and they are really great to us.:D

True, BB!

When I received the letter from Coach corporate in NY, I was devastated! It's amazing what late payments will do to your credit!
And I wish derfsisiht01 would have been the manager up here and hired me anyway!
I didn't know you could do that!
The manager said her hands were tied and was upset that she couldn't give me the job!
And, BTW, I have NO criminal activity! Not even a speeding ticket!

Done ranting...good luck, OP!

I worked at Coach for Christmas 2005 and was paid $10.00 per hour plus every payday (thursdays) I received a card for 50% off 1 bag, 1 leather accessory and 40% off shoes and watches. We also had first pick at items before they went to the outlet store for 65% off. They called me this Christmas to work again but this time they did a background/credit check and a lawsuit from my past came up so they rescinded the job offer. Regular employees are allowed up to 12 bags a year I think.
