Lee- May I ask who your insurance company is? I can not find a policy that is cash out.

We pay for our losses, like car damage (valets!) out of our pocket. If my house burned down or an earthquake, we'd claim that.

Thieves break into homes that make it easy for them. Bad neighborhoods, no watch programs, Homeowner gone for extended time. And watch who one hires to do painting or remodeling.

I'm insured with Chubb. I'm almost positive my policy is cash out, but maybe I should double check. I guess we are sort of self-insured since I don't have everything on the policy.

I keep a mix of things at home and some in my safety deposit box. I had a bad experience as a child having all of my mom's jewelry and mine stolen - what hurt wasn't the monetary value, it was the sentimental value.

Not sure if Canadian insurance differs, but if it helps, I was told that our home owners insurance covers jewelry up to only $1000. Every piece that is over that amount, you get what is called a "floater policy" that covers each for it's valued amount. But, you have to pay a monthly/quarterly amount on each. But it's worth it to me to have piece of mind.

I've started to think about this too, I dont have anything higher than 4k each but I have a couple in the higher 3k arena.. I'm wondering if I shoud do the same....

Hi ladies,

I wonder if you insure your jewelry or not.

I have thought about insuring some big-ticket items, but I am not sure if I should do it.

After all, it is possible that the information (what jewelry you have, where you live, etc.) gets to the "wrong" person, KWIM? I would feel a bit insecure if some people knew what kind of jewelry I have and how much it is worth.

How do you feel about jewelry insurance - yes or no?

Absolutely, I can't stress this enough. My house was robbed 2 years ago last August and I would be crying still if I didn't have a rider on my jewelry.

You can trust your insurance agent, I've had the same agent for 18 years, unless you're not with a legitimate company.

What if you drop a ring down the garbage disposal and you chew it up, it slips off while walking, leave jewelry in your hotel and it gets stolen, etc, etc. Only a rider will cover this.

ABSOLUTELY. No one anticipates a break-in or a tragedy (loss, mugging, accident, etc.), but they can happen to anyone at anytime. I have carefully collected pieces over the years, and while the loss would still be devastating, I can't imagine what I would do if I didn't have insurance.

Oh gosh, definitely YES! I always insure any piece of jewelry that would be too costly for me to replace in a timely manner. For me, that's just my engagement ring and diamond studs. I don't insure my miscellaneous bits, just the big-ticket items that I can't run right out and replace.
