When I travel, I put my little jewelry travel case in my carry on, and it gets banged around, so I know my jewelry bangs inside the case. I sometimes use the little felt jewelry pouches, but those get bulky too. So now, most of the time, I just wrap the piece in tissue paper to fill in any air gaps or cushion the tossing around. I do put my long necklaces/pearl strands in a pouch though as they fall out of the tissue paper easily.

This is what I do as well, wrap items in tissue or in very small felt bags and put them in the individual storage compartments so that they have adequate cushioning. If the case gets flipped upside down, my pieces don't go banging around. I've been looking into a set of new felt or velvet bags and Etsy seems like a good source. It's just that it would be so nice if the jewelry box makers would do this themselves and make them custom for their specific travel jewelry cases!
