Jeremy Renner was trying to stop snowplow from hitting his nephew when he was crushed

Jeremy Renner was trying to prevent his adult nephew from being hit when he was run over by his 14,330 pound snowplow on New Year's Day.

According to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office incident report, filed Friday and published Wednesday by CNN, the Mayor of Kingstown and The Avengers actor, 52, used the snowcat to tow his nephew's truck out of snow at his Reno, Nev., property to the main street. After, the plow started sliding sideways down a hill, so Renner got out. However, the emergency brake was not engaged and the plow, which runs on a track, headed in the path of his nephew. Renner tried to stop it and was pulled under and crushed.

"The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding, causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake," the sheriff's report concluded. "Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to [his nephew], he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over."

The report also revealed that the brake indicator light inside the snowcat's cab was not working and noted that "mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident."

It also said impairment was not believed to be a factor in the incident.

According to the report, Renner — who broke "30 plus bones" in the accident — was interviewed in the hospital on Jan. 5. He told investigators that after towing the truck into the street, the snowplow began "sliding sideways" and then "it began to roll down the hill." He jumped off but realized it was "heading directly toward [his nephew]" so he attempted "to stop or divert the Pistenbully."

To get into the cab, Renner had to climb on the moving track and was "immediately pulled under the left side track." He was "completely crushed" under the vehicle and had "extreme [difficulty] breathing."

After the plow "rolled over him" it "continued down the road."

With the right side of his chest "collapsed" and upper torso "crushed," he remained on the ground and "focused on his breathing" while his nephew and others aided him until first responders were able to get there amid the snow storm.

Yahoo Entertainment has reached out to Renner's spokesperson for comment about the report.

On New Year's Day it was reported that Renner was airlifted to the hospital after the accident. The snowplow was seized by authorities to rule out any mechanical failure.

Renner underwent two surgeries while in the ICU. After over two weeks, he was and continues recovery at home. Over the weekend he shared an image of a physical therapy session.

"Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years," he wrote. "Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love. I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all."

Jeremy Renner Broke Eight Ribs in 14 Places, Shares Terrifying 911 Call in First TV Interview Since Snow Plow Accident

By Zack Sharf

Jeremy Renner will sit down with Diane Sawyer for his first television interview since the critical snow plow accident that nearly cost him his life. The ABC News special, titled “Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph,” will air in April ahead of the world premiere of Renner’s new Disney+ series “Rennervations,” which will serve as the actor’s first public press appearance since the accident.

“All of it,” Renner tells Sawyer when asked how much of the pain he remembers. “I was awake through every moment.”

Renner was hospitalized for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries at the start of January after his Sno-Cat, a large snow plow that weighs at least 14,330 pounds, ran him over. The actor was trying to help his nephew out of the snow near his home in Lake Tahoe when the Sno-Cat crushed him.

“I see him in a pool of blood coming from his head,” Renner’s nephew tells Sawyer in the ABC News special. “I ran up to him. I didn’t think he was alive.”

A teaser for the Renner interview includes the shocking 911 call made to save Renner’s life (the actor is heard moaning in pain as people tell him to “keep fighting), as well Sawyer reading off a long list of Renner’s injuries, which include “eight ribs broken in 14 places. Right knee, right ankle broken, left leg tibia broken, left ankle broken, right clavicle broken, right shoulder broken. Face, eye socket, jaw, mandible broken. Lung collapsed. Pierced from the rib bone, your liver — which sounds terrifying.”

“What’s my body going to look like?” Renner remembers thinking about all of his injuries. “Am I just going to be a spine and a brain, like a science experiment?”

The actor remains stoic during the interview clip but briefly tears up when Sawyer says, “I heard that you had, in sign language, you said to your family, ‘I’m sorry.'”

“I chose to survive. That’s not gonna kill me, no way,” he says. “I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience, but I’ve been refueled and refilled with love and titanium.” The teaser features footage of Renner’s physical therapy, including him using a knee scooter to move around.

“When you look in the mirror, do you see a new face?” Sawyer asks, to which Renner replies, “No, I see a lucky man.”

A few days after the interview airs, Renner will appear in person at the “Rennervations” world premiere, taking place April 11 at Los Angeles’ Regency Village Theater. The actor will participate in a Q&A after a screening. All four episodes of “Rennervations,” the actor’s new vehicle renovation show, begin streaming April 12 on Disney+.

Since the January accident, Renner has used social media to keep his fans updated through his physical therapy. Just recently, the “Hawkeye” actor posted a video in which he appeared walking for the first time with the assistance of an anti-gravity treadmill. The actor captioned the post: “Now is the time for my body to rest and recover from my will.”

“Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph” is set to air April 6 on ABC. The special will also be available to stream on Hulu.

If you didn't get a chance to see the Diane Sawyer interview here are excerpts. They get detailed so beware if you are sensitive. This guy has gone thru and is going thru hell. I admire him revealing these details and struggles to the public.

I saw about half of it. It was difficult to watch but I was impressed with what a positive attitude he has while enduring such difficulties. He is grateful to be alive and so grateful for the people around him.

Just watched the whole special. He's never going to be able to go thru a metal detector again without setting it off.
Super down to earth and it's amazing how good he looks and how well he's moving after just 10 weeks (at the time of the special). I admire his mental and physical tenacity to regain as much as his new body will allow. Rooting for him!

I love him in the Mayor of Kingstown, wish they promoted the Bourne movie with him more… he is underrated but excellent actor. His recent tragic accident and survival is unbelievable….
