It's so ridiculous lol, the obsession with fooling people by using filters, I don't get it. Back the phone up 6" and stop filtering, be real FFS. I have a 15 yr DD that sees all these females on social media and I know it affects them, the heavily photoshopped and filtered pics are not attainable for real people, I'd feel like a fraud if I did that. Kids now have more eating disorders, want plastic surgery earlier, are depressed, etc... it's really sad.
Why do women her age (no idea how old she is, I assume we're about same age) want to filter every tiny line out of their skin?
I get a small amount of botox and have had a touch of filler in my tear troughs under my eyes, I always tell my doc not to touch my smile lines, or affect my eyebrow movement. If I filtered all my pics like Jennifer my 21 DD would roast me
Not sure what makes younger women feeling bad about themselves, but blaming older women for their maladjustment feels wrong to me.
My son claimed that I did not need Botox that I was beautiful the way I was.
yes, he is well trained and a smooth operator

I think that social media has been a BIG contributor to the rise in cosmetic procedures and obsession with appearances. But I think we also have to admit that the availability of those procedures and the advances that make them less invasive plays a big role too. I remember in my early teens a plastic surgery center opened up in my town and it was such a big deal. I can remember people laughing about the parking lot being in the back so people could sneak in and no one would know they were there. Anti-aging fixes were things like face lifts that were a major surgery that required a long recovery.
Now, we can dash in for botox and then go on with other errands. People proudly boast about the procedures they've gotten. Many celebrities (not Jennifer, but others) will tell people everything they've had done. Jane Fonda even did the scene in Grace and Frankie where she removed all of her "fixes" so people could see just how much was done to make her look so great. The taboo is gone and the procedures are easier. That's a big contributor to why there are more cosmetic procedures being done.

Yes, FOR SURE
You are definitely onto something.
As SM forces comparison and as my grandma used to say, comparison is the killer of joy.
Plus as Libby Ruth eluded in her post, plastic surgery is no longer a taboo and everyone wants to be perfect.
Apparently according to the NYtimes, Instagram is partly responsible for feelings of inadequacies.

And Tik TOK reinforces whichever feelings you have. So there. If you feel bad for example about your current life, Tik TOK reinforces that feeling and exploits this negative and toxic way of thinking.
Wonder how this site makes people feel?

I am grateful every day that I did not grow up with Social Media. Compared to how teen age girls look now, I looked like an absolute troll, but thought I was the cat's meow because my mama told me I was. My DD is 17 years old and luckily we currently do NOT live in Southern California, but in a rather "granola" small town in Northern CA (never thought I'd say that!!!), that emphasizes intelligence and sports/exercise over beauty. Sure, my daughter is exposed to SM daily, but neither she nor her friends walk around looking like little Kardashian wannabes. All these celebs that promote perfection...I think many of them have severe self confidence issues underneath their "flawless" images.
