off topic but in the 60's my mother (a bohemian free spirit in those days) used to carry exactly that same basket!
I suspect she brought it in one of the Portuguese shops that were around Portobello road where we lived.
I remember it vividly as a child and it used to annoy me because it always seemed to be banging into me  and I once got a splinter off of it!
I now wish I'd kept it for myself as even when she moved onto 'normal bags' she kept it in the kitchen to store potatoes and onions!
Nice memories sans splinter and the banging. Just think you can say: dang, that was one banging bag!

Dear dear Jane, lately i have lost loved ones. so this has not been easy to understand, even if i only just saw her from a distance in person......i first saw and image of Jane Birkin in a Movie called Death on the nile ,1970s version with peter ustinov and maggie Smith..... this image of her as Louise Bourget, the face the Eyes........ amazing.... the DVD included a behind the scenes, Jane talked to the camera holding her basket looking perfect..... My mom said that's Jane Birkin,I became a fan. I love her music and the bag she co created.... since then Jane has been a part of me Di do di do da is still my very favorite morning song and Birkin bag and jeans still my top look......... Love You Jane ! hope you Munkey Serge and Kate ........... are together again.

In 1966 I was a teenager when I first saw Jane Birkin in, Antonioni's, Blow-Up.
I had forgotten until yesterday when I was looking up Antonioni.
She was one of the two girls throwing themselves at the fashion photographer, Thomas (David Hemmings), begging for a photo shoot.
I think their roles were eclipsed by the then more famous Vanessa Redgrave.

It's Paris, so ...

 I wish they (the media) would stop writing, therefore speading, that Jane's daughter Kate died by suicide when there's was no evidence of that. I don't believe in the stigma attached to it if that's what happened, but the media uses "reported suicide" as a legal loophole because they know it was only a guess in the first place. Just because someone else jumped to a conclusion before, doesn't mean you should continue to spread nothing but rumour. People read a word and they believe it, that it's under 'news' in a mainstream, non-tabloid publication makes them even more likely to believe it.

It made me feel bad for the family before, but especially now so soon after Jane's death. If you don't know how someone died, either just report the fact that person died, or don't mention it at all. It has no bearing on the story anyway.

Remembering her today just cause I was seated next to three very much younger Hermès ladies at the ivy during lunch with very preppy and put together outfits. I overheard them talking about how they baby their birkins so much. All three of them had 25s in retourne: one had noir with ghw, one possibly vert yucca with phw, and one that looked like either curry or jaune ambre with phw. Heard one say they won’t buy anything over size 25, the other say she can’t get herself to remove the stickers, and all agreed on saying they don’t like any slouch on their Birkin.

The whole time I was just thinking how they were the polar opposite of how Jane Birkin was with her Birkin and there’s nothing wrong with that whatsoever, I just came to a realization that it’s very rare that I see anyone, even in my circle of friends who are lifelong Hermès patrons, using their Birkin like Jane Birkin did - as a good quality utilitarian tote that will stand the test of time. It was a good day to remember her.

Cross posting this on the Overheard thread too!

No one is right or wrong IMO. Jane looked so authentic and natural with her relaxed and used B 35*. Those women obviously have different style(s) and priorities.

Prize possession or a chuck-around, once a bag is bought it belongs to the owner to be treated as they see fit.

It also helps stay more relaxed about chucking one's $$$$$bag around if after a certain time H gives one a new one for free (which she richly deserved of course).

Willing to bet the ones overhead have no clue Birkin is the name of an actual person and not a trophy symbol
This was exactly what was on my mind and what I sort of wanted to say but just opted not to lol I meant what I said when I stated there’s nothing wrong with how one chooses to treat their Birkin. It’s their bag they can do whatever they want with it but it was just my realization that it’s really rare to see anyone treat or use their birkins for what it was intended to be:)
