is this normal?

Not that I have the money to do so, but that is such a rare/lovely combo that I would probably just buy a wallet or something. You can always sell the extra item on ebay and get most (maybe all) of your money back. If I could afford it, there is no way I would pass that bag up.

I got an offer for a beatuiful Birkin but the Sales ask me to spend addition couple thoudsands to get it. is it normal? is it Hermes policy?
It is one of the unwritten custom that some of us had dealt with, in fact one of us just went through the same situation about 2 weeks ago, basically building more relationship, in term of more patronage, helping the sales of the store along the way

I think that when you're not a regular customer or VIP,they expect you to purchase a few things before allowing you to buy a Birkin. This "technique" was used by many tpfers when traveling to Paris or elsewhere.By buying a few items, you then can purchase a bag...

I know reading the forums that this happens but i must be vey lucky as i never purchased anything at all before at Hermes and all i asked if its is possible to place an order for a Kelly thinking it would be a resounding no but she said yes , and i ended up buying my black kelly that was in stock and go in next month to place my order, my lovely SM had no problems with me not being a reg customer and was so helpfull and patient, maybe i am just lucky but i really feel it

I could understand an SA having a special bag in the store and calling existing customers, who have purchased previously, to see if one of them is interested.
But if I'm in the store, old customer or new, and you show me the bag, I would consider that it is for sale for the price marked. Call me naive .. I know this is Hermes and it is special stuff .. but this request strikes me as .. oh, sleazy? Retail blackmail?

I've heard of friends who visited Las Vegas H store (this was a while back so I would say it's the Bellagio H store) and was told she could purchase a birkin if she purchases other items from the store.

I guess the SA isn't getting a commission on the bag do is trying to compensate by having you buy some commission eligible items, like a little finders fee. Risky position to take in this economy, 2 years ago it would have been a no brainer.

^^^I was gonna say the same thing. The commision on bags is pooled by all the SA's whereas sales on non-birkin & non-kellys count towards the sa's INDIVIDUAL commission.

Also, I would say, if the SA wants to play dirty, so can you. Buy a dress or wallet over $2K along with the Birkin, and walk right back in there a few days later and return the dress or wallet and keep your Birkin. And then you can say "ha".
