Is the bag wearing me?

So here is my two cents :). I’m 5’3.5” tall and 102-110 lbs (ok, I’ve been snacking all summer) and have owned a few retourne Kelly 35s, mostly because I needed the larger capacity to carry legal documents with me. It was really work necessity that drove me to the larger sized Kelly, but I did feel like I was wearing a messenger bag when I would wear my K35 crossbody and the width of the crossbody strap didn’t make a difference aesthetically. I didn’t want to look like I was wearing a messenger bag when going to the office so I preferred to hand carry my K35s which made me feel more lady like and feminine, albeit still a casual look given the retourne style and 35cm size.

I would save wearing K35 crossbody for occasions when I wanted to look casual and sporty, always with jeans or pants, never with dresses, skirts or even shorts.

I noticed that even a K32 worn crossbody can look like a messenger bag and give off a sportier vibe whereas a smaller K28 still looks like a handbag whether it’s hand-carried or worn crossbody.

My advice would be to pick the size that you need to function, and then you can figure out ways to wear that particular size to create a more feminine look, sporty look, etc. At one point, I needed a Kelly 40 retourne for the capacity. After admitting to myself that I needed this size for work documents, then I figured out different ways to wear the 40 to look more or less casual, sporty, lady-like. So for me, rather than trying to pick a Kelly based on what size looks best on my body size and type, my recommendation is function first, aesthetics second.

Truth be told, there are ways to successfully pull off carrying a Kelly in any and every size regardless of stature.

Excellent advice. I am not as articulate as you, but I recently posted that carrying a bag with attitude and confidence also enables one to get what is functional and make it look good.

Such great advice! I will remember your words dear Lala next time I agonise about size. Truer word has never been spoken.

Bumping this thread. @lala28 's position really continues to echo my own on bag size. However......

I recently was out with one of my "small" bags (seriously I thought it was small - too small for my regular organizer to fit comfortably while full, not a day bag for me at all). A friend took a snap and I was shocked at how big it looked on me! Apparently what I see in the mirror is really, really out of whack.

I’m also 5’2 and I have a Kelly 32 in sellier and 28 in retourne. I feel that K35 would be a bit too large for your petite frame. For hand-held professional look, go for 32 and for a more casual look I would think that 28 would be better. Btw, are you based in HK?

Too big on you. You should try the bag for sizes before making purchase decisions. I am petite and sometimes I even find my 28 Sellier K looks kind of big on me. 35 looks totally disproportionate on me.

Seeing thus thread again after a few months made me realise that this is not a problem that taller people often have to consider. It is quite difficult to appreciate how it might feel.

Hi all! I've scoured the forums and read all the 28 vs 32 vs 35 threads I could find. I went out and tried on a Kelly 35. Sadly I cannot try a 28 or 32 where I am based. Could you please do me a huge favour and take a look at the below and see if you think the bag is wearing me? I won't be purchasing this beauty. I'm actually looking at a vert olive or black in barenia - retourne. I would also purchase a thicker/wider strap to be able to wear it more casually as well as cross body. All feedback gratefully received. Please excuse the durr face.

It’s a great bag, but imo it’s a little too big for you with the strap at that length. As others have suggested, hand held could work, or perhaps a shorter strap so the bag is at hip height rather than below it? Ultimatelythough, if you love it who cares what anyone else thinks, enjoy it!!

Exact same thing happened to me, I had no idea how big a bag looked on me until I saw myself carrying it in a picture. Haven’t used the bag since!

Sometimes we need to carry things so we need a med-large bag regardless of our body shape/size. Tell me to MMOB but if you weren't, perhaps try wearing sturdier looking/flatter shoes/boots. It seems to balance out the 'look'.

Of course, some times I need a briefcase to carry my things, but my response was centered around overall daily style, keeping proportion in mind.
