Is it rude to buy your own big diamond ring?

My husband wanted us to go new/unbranded/blingier. I wanted a signed piece with a storefront I could easily go to for cleanings/repairs.

We ended up finding a vintage Tiffany three stone with great quality diamonds (VVS!) and that was under budget. We saved quite a lot... We paid 1/3 of its replacement value now (a year and a half later) all because some people think used rings are "cursed."

Maybe if you showed your FI just HOW much more you can buy with the same budget, he'll be swayed? By going vintage, you might be able to find higher clarity/color for the price?

They don't trust enough in their own relationship if they believe this bs.

Good for you guys being smart & buying used. Who can tell?

I have never understood men who have such a strong opinion about the e ring. I picked mine out all by myself cause I'm the one who has to wear it. My husband only cared that it didn't go over his $$ limit.
Can I ask why you BF has such strong opinions about this?

One possible consideration might be that the older rings are not GIA certified, which to some (such as my husband) is very important. However, like most of the ladies have said, it is very hard to find a "brand new" diamond that has not previously been set. I guess my husband and i don't really understand the "curse" thing, we had just thought that it's only bad luck if you wear a ring from a woman who was divorced?

However, I think it's important for you to voice your opinions: yes you will love whatever he gets you because it symbolizes your love. However, are you going to want to wear it every single day for the rest of your life? My husband and I compromised and bought the engagement ring he wanted but I got to choose the wedding ring that I want. (They are two separate rings, with the engagement ring in a lock box that I actually only wear once a year).

Good luck with everything and let us know how everything turns out!

I haven't had any problems getting my ring serviced at Tiffany!

Going for vintage/pre-owned worked for us because neither of us felt like it was a compromise.

And we saved around $20k from the retail price! That savings helped cushion other expenses like the wedding and moving into our first condo and fixing it up the way we wanted it.

I second the idea of looking at good old gold, they sell august vintage round and cushion diamonds which are new diamonds, cut in antique style but with fabulous optical performance. Also they sell a range of colour and clarity in these diamonds, so you could get a colorless diamond if you wish. ( me I love my m colored cushion!)
This could be a good compromise, a new colorless diamond for him, an antique type cut for you all rolled into one.

We did the same thing! My ring is also a second hand Tiffany. It's even better because you know the resale is there and not too far from what you paid although I'm not into upgrades.

Hi sooyang!

I'm not trying to sway you, because though I love old cuts (obviously), the AVC line at GOG is beautiful and we've created settings for AVC stones - you really can't go wrong either way.

But some things to consider - many of the diamonds on the market today being sold as "new" have been traded back in via a vendor's upgrade policy, or, as is the case sometimes with the newly cut antique style stones particularly in lower colors, antique diamonds which have been recut (criminal!)

The odds that the diamond you buy was cut from recently mined rough and has never been previously owned are pretty slim, and I don't believe vendors are required to disclose this.

The other point I'd make is that we've sold hundreds of antique stones and have not yet had one buyer report back that her ring was cursed :)

Anyway, I'll vote for the antique every time, regardless of who you purchase it from. There's something so special about no two stones being alike. You could have a tray of 100 OEC's or OMC's in front of you, and no two stones would be similar.

Just my 2 cents.

i have no problem buying a used diamond, it came out of the ground...it didn't fall from the heavens to bless someone's relationship.

i'd probably get my own setting, but that would depend.

heck, it's the eco thing to do.
