Is it just me or does the "shrinkage" factor set quickly??

I like this post very much.

I've never had the urge to wear huge studs in my ear, not that I wouldn't like them, just I feel that smaller studs in my ear are all they need. And besides, I'd prefer to SEE what I wear when it gets about the 1 carat range.

It's also very easy to get wrapped up in forum hype. Always someone upgrading or changing their mind. But at the end of the day, it's not about the forum or impressing others, it's about YOU and what works with your lifestyle.

I also wonder about how much posted here is "real" Not to diminish or refute anyone's legitimate purchase or ownership, but there are times when I read threads/posts and wonder, "is this for real"?

Thank you :) I also agree. I just got home from Europe and most of the women's diamonds were a lot smaller, but they were beautiful and they wore them well.

I've upgraded my e-rings, diamond studs, tennis bracelet and necklaces...several times. Now I am happy! All this before I joined tPF.
As La Contessa said...it's what you want and are comfortable with (and you'll know), then you will be happy!

My original engagement ring is a solitaire, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 carats, I never knew or cared. Closer to 1.5 I think. It was (is) a very pretty stone, very brilliant. I wanted and now have a bigger stone, flanked by trilliants, and I almost never wear it. I like the ring, but am uncomfortable with people looking at it. It's just not great for everyday wear, for me and my style. I also almost never wear my bigger studs, I prefer the small round ones I've been wearing for more than 15 years. I prefer a smaller, more sparkly stone over a bigger one that is less "live."

thats what i was getting at --. 1.55 is a great size. I also think that size of stone is really about proportions to the hand and the setting. I know people who just want enormous stones (nothing wrong with that!) and others like myself who are just as picky about the setting. I have designed several of my own pieces and the design of the setting is probably more important than size to me

This is an excellent point. I have long, narrow fingers. I saw a particular ring design/setting that I liked, but it looked silly on me, so I had a jeweler make a similar one smaller in scale with different stones.

I'm with Contessa, it easy to get carried away with size in this forum. However talking from my own experience, it's a different thing posting in a forum and actually wearing your ring out in public. I love my ring, I spent a lot of time with the design and it means so much to me, plus it cost a bomb, but do I wear it everyday as I should be? No. Does it fit my lifestyle? Only half the time, maybe 50% of my day I could wear it (when I'm out), but I'm lazy and intimidated by the size and I keep on wearing everything else but my e ring. That's the honest truth.

So much does come down to scale. I'm not a tiny girl. I could put on a monster stone, wear it out, and not get a second look. Most of the tPFers who have tried on my e-ring are shocked at how it looks on them vs. on me. I will never be able to afford a diamond that actually looks huge on my hand.

In my case, I'm sure some of that also comes down to the combination of scale with my preferred setting, which is dead plain, with nothing but the single stone to carry it, and I want to wear it with a dead plain, thin gold band. When a single stone is the only one on my hand, I've noticed it looks dwarfed pretty quickly.

But really, OP, if you want bigger, go with bigger, if you don't, don't, everyone's opinion and experiences are so different. As scarlet555 said, bigger isn't always better, but neither is it wrong. You get to make the decision that makes you happy.

I guess I'm lucky, I've never had a serious case of shrinkage. Sure, I've swooned at some of the rings here, but I've always felt super lucky to have my 2 ct ring. It sparkles like mad, and it's as big or bigger than just about all the rings I see IRL.

This is so me. I had originally wrote more in my last post but erased it. For me my ring often feels "to much" I feel bad when I wear it out and people look because I know these are hard times. People are trying to keep their homes and feed their children and here I have this blingy stone that is quite large for our geographical location. Plus, to be honest, it no longer really represents where my husband and I are anymore either (economy hut us hard too). It almost feels "fake" to wear it. Before my whole "redo" debacle, I hadn't worn it for over a year. I do wear it now because I like to look at it now, but there are definitely still times I just put on a wedding band only.

I suffer from goldilocks syndrome, constantly looking for the perfect fit. I have a modest pair of studs, a modest tennis bracelet, and a modest promise right hand ring and i wear them all every single day. My hubby always talks about upgrading my studs and bracelet and i just say no way. He knows better than to talk about my promise ring because i could never part with it! Now my e-ring i have never been happy with. It is an E color, round, 1.5 ct and i just never was into stark white diamonds. Also, the setting is just gigantic metal. It is a pain to wear and uncomfortable on my little sausage fingers. I recently went looking for low colored or yellow diamonds and even though color mattered most, size did matter. I had settled on a 2.5 ct pale yellow barely tinted cushion and went back 3 days later and it was already too small and not yellow enough. So i went with a 3 ct fancy yellow and it is almost just right. Lol "almost"... Sigh.

:goodpost: well said!

I think most of us are on this forum because we like to discuss things with like-minded people. In truth, I would never tell 90percent of my friends that my (slightly over 2 carat) diamond now feels small. I wear my prior (slightly over 1 carat) original stone as a beautiful bezel set necklace and love it everyday.

Was my post bordering on the superficial--yes. But, not too terribly out of context for a fashion and jewelry message board, no? This may be the only place I can say "out loud" I really think I really need a 3.5 carat F color nearly flawless round bezel set diamond and not feel like a jackass : )

By the way, I have little sausage fingers, too. I think that makes a big difference!

:goodpost: in fact, I thought you were half joking/making fun of yourself when you started this thread.

My first engagement ring from my first marriage was 1.75 carats and while I never thought it was huge, it was larger than most of my friends rings at the time and I didn't wish it to be larger (most of us married in our early / mid 20's). Now that I am in my late 30's and on my second marriage my engagement ring is 2.7 carats and I LOVE it. I definitely would not want it to be any bigger, it attracts enough attention as it is. My ring size is a 4 3/4 and the ring is set in a high cathedral setting so it looks enormous on.

This is SO TRUE!! I don't discuss any of my major purchases with family nor friends (unless tPF friends) for fear they will think I am crazy and superficial. Thank God for TPF and all of its members. Where else can I talk Chanel bags, Tiffany jewelry, and Rolexes without being judged :tpfrox:

BTW, am sure once I get my upgraded ering, I will be in the same boat :p
