Is anyone else tired of the Chanel Bag trend?

I love the design of Chanel bags.. I’m disappointed that they’ve become so hyped recently. Not only is it extremely difficult to get bags from the boutique nowadays, but Chanel does seem more ‘basic’ and I see people wearing it much more often. Maybe the price increases will eventually cause the trend to fizzle out. I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m being snobby or trying to gatekeep Chanel. I just hate when something becomes a huge trend because when it goes out of style it starts to look very dated. I like classic flaps because they’re timeless and I want them to stay that way. Chanel right now reminds me of Supreme a few years ago, with people lining up outside the store.. now the trend has passed and Supreme is really dead and uncool

I am surprised to hear this because while Chanel has a lot of clout/long standing brand recognition I actually don’t see it much. I am in the LA area but even when visiting Beverly Hills, I don’t see Chanel nearly as much as I see LV and Hermes mini Kelly’s or Birkins. I also feel like Botega Jody, Dior Saddle or Prada re-edition nylon are the influencer bags I see everywhere (online and irl). I do frequently see WOCs and occasional CF but I don’t find Chanel that ubiquitous. Curious if that is because it’s so hard to find and the other bags mentioned are far easier to find and less expensive (barring the Hermes bags mentioned)

I wonder if this is regional. I live in a major US city and almost never see Chanel. So much so, that I started to wonder if the bags are “off” trend.

Boomers & Silent Gen that I know are buying more Hermes now (not my cup of tea). Millennials and Z’s express quite a bit of a backlash against Chanel as they view it a symbol of the worst of consumerism & capitalism (the cuckoo price increases and that pathetic money grab Advent calendar / social media debacle caused serious perception issues.)

I, Gen X’r, love what I have but likely won’t buy more (Already sold half my Chanels. Thinking of selling yet another because I don’t wear it.) I have a bad taste in my mouth with Chanel’s new posture because, candidly, I feel they don’t want me in their bags since I don’t buy Chanel RTW.

Eagerly curious about additional perspectives.

Here in the UK I see Chanel everywhere. What surprises me is who I see carrying it. It lately hasn’t been who I would consider Chanel clientele, but young things usually in hyper cheap clothing (i mean cheap body con dresses not something cool or high/low) and too much make up pretending this bag gives them the right to be obnoxious. Always taking pictures of their bag in the middle of Oxford street, walking around showing people they have a Chanel bag. Rather get the impression the bag to them is about status rather than an appreciation. Another question I have is how they are affording these bags-my suspicion is pay as you go or debt. Yes people can save and everyone is deserving, but forgive me I don’t think every 22 year old wearing H&M had been saving or working for years for it.

(Ps: same goes for YSL bags that have the large YSL logo on them)

Chanel bags are beautiful, but between the current set I see carry the basics, the frequency, and the price hikes, I’m taking a break and moving onto Hermes (and leaning into some more interesting brands). I see a lot of Hermes but it makes sense based on area and demographics.

But, yes, too many wonderful brands are feeling a little saturated depending on where you live. I will say this, I am not selling anything i love, this will cool off eventually and it will be cool and vintage :)

Chanel classic is always going to be an IT bag. People grow up dreaming about the day they own one, regardless of if it’s a bran/quality appreciation, or status thing.

The world has changed. Luxury is more accessible (preloved + payment plans) and desired now, especially with the social media age.

There’s so much access to credit cards, prostitution, scamming, and other questionable source of income. Also, a high number of young entrepreneurs and millennials who climb the corporate ladder quickly, could potentially explain the change in demographic when it comes to luxury.

Luxury is everywhere, and not just chanel.

I‘m not really tired of the bags but rather of the brand. The constant anti-consumer moves are just annoying. I mean good for them, it makes a lot of financial sense to behave like this. But to me the brand is just about price increases now which I honestly find a bit grating.

Also I will always fight against the idea of it being too ubiquitous. This is an expensive item and being able to afford it shows a degree of privilege a vast majority of people do not have. Social Media gives us the impression that everyone has a Chanel when in reality most don’t and never will.

I live in NYC and I honestly barely ever see Chanel's. Maybe we tend to notice bags we carry? I have seen like two Celine nano's and maybe that's because it's my bag of choice. I feel like 90% of people though neither carry nor know of luxury brands. The idea of a $5000+ bag being everywhere is puzzling to me When most Americans don't even have $1,000 in savings.

I definitely don't agree with the sentiment that luxury is everywhere either.

I will also note that I'm not active on social media so that may sway my perspective. I also distinctly spend my time in Midtown as that's where I live. Perhaps in the more affluent Manhattan neighborhoods, everyone and their grandmother is carrying a Chanel?

I think SM can sway our perception. If we keep going to influencers that carry Chanel and/or the latest trends, the algorithms will make sure we're well supplied with more and more.

The physical places that I see lots Chanel, I have always seen Chanel, locally there're more LVs.

I agree I see more designer on younger people generally though. I think that's up to them, but I hope they're not just giving into peer/commercial pressures but really enjoy wearing them for a very long time not just for a trend.

This is something that has been bugging me as well.

To me, being ‘on trend’ often entails getting rid of or not wearing the item once the trend starts subsiding.Unless you are really wealthy, I don’t understand how one could consciously buy luxury items in order to be trendy. Equating expensive luxury items with throwaway items (which trendy fashion usually is) just feels very wrong to me.

agree with the posts above - i think the frequency of chanel sighting depends on the area. I'm in Singapore and boy, I see Chanel bags literally everywhere I go. It's not just seen at high-end shopping malls, I see it in the supermarkets, food centres, community clubs, yoga classes and gyms.

I don't mind seeing the bags though, some designs are quite nice especially in tweed.

Your comment inspired me to ask my daughter about Chanel and today’s youth. She said some young adults don’t like Chanel because it’s too “in your face”, but some others think it’s cool to be young and carry a bag their grandmas wear.
Most of my daughter’s friends have graduated from the middle school LV Palm Springs mini and Speedy, to high school Chanel bags (from their moms). My daughter’s friends who are not able to inherit (or be gifted) a Chanel bag or clothing, work minimum wage jobs and shop at H&M, so they can save for a Chanel.
