So, Coach, I think the answer is Yes, you can use the 50cm birkin for carry on travel if you so choose, however, it is heavy. Whether you actually wish to carry a bag so large and heavy or not is simply something that you have to decide. For me, it has worked just fine.

Wow, that is some extensive research, Mistikat! Lucky for me, the airline doesn't seem to mind as much as you do.

I was just trying to answer the question posed which is
"Is the 50cm Travel Birkin too big to be carryon luggage? " posed by coach. My answer is "YES" because I use it for that purpose. I truly think that one's deciding whether it is too heavy or whether it takes pleasure out of travel is a matter of personal preference and opinion.

If the cliche that a picture is worth a thousand words holds any validity, let's rely on pictures.

Google is a terrific thing - takes seconds. (And I think you meant to answer the question "no".) I have no issues with you personally but yes, I do mind when I'm travelling and because someone else has used more than their luggage size allotment, there is less room for other people's belongings. I personally wouldn't risk carrying something that large, as ornery airline staff have made me check bags that did fit the size guidelines. I wouldn't want to risk being asked to check a 40 Birkin (don't own a 50). But I'm glad it works for you.

I guess it depends on whether you travel first class/business or economy.... and of course the airline. 50cm is normally the limit most big airlines allow, and if you travel lots, that is the bag for you.

n2chanel - beautiful delicious pictures! i would definitely be happy if i saw you in the airport.

.... and to the OP, it absolutely makes a difference whether you are traveling coach or business/first class as N2Chanel's overhead bin picture seems to show. not just because airline personnel tend to be more lenient with non-coach travelers, but also because anything you put in overhead in coach is more likely to be jammed by other travelers. more people, more stuff, more jamming. it bothers me to have anyone touch my tumi bag and hate it when they try to shove their bags on top of mine when the bin is full. i think it would bother me even more if they touched my birkin. i put my birkin 35 inside an environsax for travel and tuck it under the seat.

Thanks Delores!

Mistikat, I understand your frustration with people who use more space than they should. I am very careful and mindful of others when I travel. I am more than willing to place my bag under the seat in front of me, which I have done. I usually place my purse, water, magazines, ipod, books, lip gloss, face cream (things I use on the plane) in this bag so having it in easy reach is convenient. I fly first class whenever I can, so there is always ample overhead space (seat 3D shown in the picture i first class) and every seat was full. In addition to the overhead, first class also has those full sized closets for garment bags and for hanging jackets, the floor space is always available in those closets as well so space has never been an issue on any of the 4 international trips I've taken with the 50cm.

I have a very hard time with mine at airports and so I don't travel with it anymore. It is softsided and if I pack it light I can squish it around so it will fit in first class, but still cumbersome. Here is mine packed full and I have never flown with it packed because of the weight. Mine is a different bag than In2chanel's so she might have better luck. Mine is a 50cm birkin and has birkin hardware, it does not have the stitching running across it. It looks the same as a 35 birkin but huge. (50cm clemence with chevron lining). The second pic shows the hardware diff.

n2chanel you travel in style, most certainly. :smile1:

I stand by my original "yes" answer because the 50 is strictly outside the guidelines and the OP could be asked to check that bag at any time. It's the risk you take.

It totally depends on the airline and sometimes depends on whether you are flying first class or coach. In my experience the airlines tend to be more lenient with first class passengers, but is it just me or are the overhead bins in first class smaller than in the coach cabin..?

I think it also just depends on the staff you encounter. I have boarded with more than 2 carry-on pieces (worried I would be told to check something..) and have never been stopped. So, I guess its a crap shoot.. :shrugs:
