My parents keep telling me to get renters insurance, maybe I should. I'd hate to see something happen to my bags (or my books and movies).

You really should. It does not cost that much a year. In my opinion it is well worth the peace of mind. Even though I have never had to use it.

A few other nice things about renters insurance. If something happens OUTSIDE your apartment to your personal property,
it is covered under renters ins. Like if your purse is stolen when shopping or if your car is broken into and they steal any personal property. I know someone that went Christmas shopping and went to dinner after and while at dinner someone broke into the car and everything that she just bought was covered under renters ins. Another good reason to have it is if someone gets hurt in your apartment the Insurance pays. Okay I am starting to sound to much like a parent I will stop now.

Generall homeowners or renters insurance will cover the contents inside where you live. Just take pictures and save receipts in case you need to prove how much they are worth. Also check if your coverage will cover the retail price of the bag or the "replacement" cost which is less.

You usually only have to declare and purchase additional coverage for really expensive items like jewery.

As others have said, renters/tenants insurance should cover your bags if something happens to them in your residence, as well as away from home (like being stolen from your car). HOWEVER, you should check to see what your deductible is. A typical deductible is probably about $2000, which means if something happens to some of your stuff, you'll have to pay the first $2000 when you repurchase everything. So if, for example, your purse is stolen from your car, and the value of the purse and its contents (e.g. wallet, wristlet, charms, mini-skinny, whatever), is less than $2000, insurance isn't going to help you out.

For that reason, I have certain things covered separately under my insurance and pay a small extra premium for them (my wedding rings, my laptop, my bike). The deductible for each of those is much lower than the regular deductible on our contents. For example, I pay about $15/year in coverage on my bike and the deductible is about $50. The bike's worth about $500. Where I live, bike theft is a huge problem and so I've already had to replace my bike once. I only had to pay $50 and got a new bike. If I hadn't had it covered separately, insurance wouldn't have covered it at all.

You could add up how much your total purse/accessory collection is worth and see about getting it insured separately. It might be worth it if the premium isn't too high.

YES, like others have said, get it!! It's so important. I'm soooo glad we have ours. Our truck was stolen out of our underground parking garage and our tenants insurance replaced all the contents (minus our deductible). Stupidly, we had left our cross-country skiis and poles on our roof rack and my husband had left ALL his tools inside. He'd been working on the engine before bed and had the whole dashboard taken apart...it never occured to him that someone would PUT IT BACK TOGETHER to steal the truck :wtf: . Anyway, when we started listing all the stuff that was in there, we couldn't believe how quickly it added up. Several pairs of sunglasses, CD player in the glove box, CDs, random travel guides...and on and on. Thank goodness for our insurance. The tools alone were worth a few thousand dollars. The only thing it didn't cover was stuff that was deemed part of the vehicle, like the roof rack itself, the spare tire cover, the jumper cables, etc, but our auto insurance covered all of that.

Anyway, long story...well...long, my husband got to go on a spending spree at Canadian Tire to replace everything and had a grand old time! Plus, we got brand new skiis!

I have renter's insurance. I have photos of what I own but don't have a detailed spreadsheet of it or anything. I know that if everything got lost in a fire, I couldn't find everything I have owned and $ won't bring back the happiness I have with those bags. It's still something but *sigh*.

From what I know, you need a special rider for items like handbags. My handbags aren't covered under my homeowners ins inparticularly. I would need a special rider for it. I'm calculating that my handbag collection is worth around 40k. So if there is a fire, trust me when I say I will salvage each and every bag by throwing them out the window.
