Influencers and Hermes

I don’t know if this goes here or in unpopular opinions but one thing that drives me crazy when influencers are unboxing the orange boxes is when they tap all their fingers nails on the boxes before opening. And normally those finger nails are the pointed talon kind. I must have misophonia because it elicits an immediate internal feelings of rage.

Bc some are misunderstanding what people are saying and are unable to have a serious conversation about consumption patterns. Can we not disagree civilly? Influencers are quite literally shaping society's consumption and it is fair game to discuss.
This is so true. Thank you @chanellover333 Like @880 I don’t follow any Hermes ‘influencers’ as such but absolutely rely on this forum for entertainment and for staying ‘au courant’. It may be true that certain type of influencer and their followers have ‘shopping addictions ‘ and there is a fine - very fine line between ’collecting’ and ‘’hoarding’. I for one appreciated @Letter ’s comment about hoarding. I know we are on TPF therefore we can have as many bags as we like- normal rules don’t apply. However it did make me think- am I a collector or a hoarder?
Definition from Google “Collecting: Possessions are part of a larger set of items. Display does not impede active living areas in home. Hoarding: Possessions become unorganized piles preventing rooms from being used for their intended purpose.’’
Also collections (which may still be a somewhat suspect pastime) usually revolve around a specific theme. ie collect black Kelly’s with gold hardware (god help me!) or I collect pink Hermes bags or more general collecting Hermes bags or just bags… the broader the theme the more likelihood of hoarding.

I always thought you’re a collector if you’re rich and a hoarder if you’re broke 🤣

Yes quite true! A ‘collection’ has a specific theme usually and the ‘collector’ will have time to maintain the collection as well as store and even display properly. By implication that means a certain amount of money as time and space cost money.
Because of SM too many people now think they must have a collection.
Influencers have normalised large ‘collections’ for display purposes rather than for personal use. For example Victoria Beckham has an extensive Hermes collection yet I have never seen a photo of her displaying her ‘collection’ in the background while being interviewed. She is often photographed carrying them though.
Anyway it is definitely a fine line - not sure why - I get ‘hoarding’ vibes from this photo, is it just me?

Well, the criticism was specifically directed at Mel, who rarely sold anything and accumulated 45 bags, which, according to some, showed hoarder tendencies. But this influencer does sell stuff and that means she has a shopping addiction? So which is it, should they sell their bags or should they not?

I myself enjoy poking fun at the nail-tapping and blatantly sponsored videos, but I don't think there's a need to be armchair psychologists and comment on what mental illness strangers might or might not have because they don't behave in a way that you deem acceptable. There are plenty of people in my life who would think that spending $10,000+ on one single bag is an indication of mental illness. But that's why I'm here, to find like-minded people that I can discuss this weird obsession with, without feeling like I belong in some sort of asylum :flowers:

PS: I would venture to guess that there are members on tPF who buy something new every few weeks, who have 45+ bags and multiple duplicates of the same style, and who buy and sell regularly. I like bags and I like looking at bags, so if someone else is spending money to show me eye candy, I'm all for it :coolio:

I like you.

Looking at this photo makes me want just one Birkin in a quiet pale neutral color. No brights please. Less is definitely more.

I always think people start off rich, then go to Hermes and become broke :D

I just saw a H 'influencer' declare she bought a fake MK to wear so she could decide if she really wanted the real thing. More like she got caught by one of her followers and had to make up a good excuse quick.

I love her Steiff Hermys! Actually, I love women who really 'dress' to impress. I would look awful, but isn't it nice to see some full-on glamour.

I think the saturation is turned-up max. If that's Iris, that's unnaturally bright. Even BE is more neon.

What's with the Fendi Monster and Karlito charms though  ? Must have been taken a while ago.

What’s wrong with those? They are classics at this point

It's giving me "swap meet chic" :coolio:

Have never seen this account before - they seem funny, quirky, and definitely tongue-in-cheek

At this moment I am fascinated with tje ‘influencers’ effect on us consumers. Of course deep down we may know that is all a bit of a front, not real etc- but ultimately we are what we consume. Do we buy more just because of what we see in SM? Do we also buy for display rather than to use? It’s bad enough that many of them promote fast fashion at its worst but they also make H into fast fashion.
It would not surprise me if some of those large H collections have a number of fakes thrown in for the cameras. Some of them keep trying to create FOMO with ‘look what I bought and how much more is worth now.’ The implication being that you are a sucker if you haven’t made money out of buying Hermes. So easy you know - you buy my road map ( or just keep watching my content) and you will learn all the tricks of buying your birkin 25 from the boutique. Then like magic the bag is worth x3. Smple really!

This is exactly right! Telling people how much money they made by guesstimating what the bag is worth. You’ve only MADE MONEY when you SELL it for more than you paid. It sitting on your shelf is NOT MAKING YOU MONEY. It’s an asset, yes, but you would need to sell it to realize the value. And it’s only worth what someone is willing to pay. And thanks to these influencers selling the hype, people are willing to pay 2-3+ the price.
