Influencers and Hermes

I don’t know if anyone else feels the same, but the more I see influencers with Kellys and Birkins, the more I actually don’t feel like carrying the bags or even want the bags. It used to feel like carrying a B/K was being part of a secret club, and now it feels too “mainstream”. I find myself gravitating more towards H bags that are less popular or even vintage designs (I still love the Vespa).
Yes I feel exactly the same..
I feel very conspicuous even carrying my Jypsiere on the subway now because I see other women stare at it and notice the closure as being the same as K&B.
A few of my colleagues have purchased B 25's and 30's and K25's in the past year.....
They are young women who follow influencers and had no interest in the brand until about 18 months ago.
In fact one even said she thought Kelly bags were for old women until she saw some influencer wearing one

I think the secret club set sail in the 90s. :giggle:

Welcome to the new secret (UTR) H club

As @Christofle mentioned it's been going for a very long time. It all depends on where we get our influence from. The B seemed to descend down the celebrity chain. There was definitely a shift from insider Paris BCBG/NY socialite to to celeb circuit late '90s. The news broadcast globally in SATC 'Samantha couldn't bag a B' episode 2001. Kate Moss (surely one of the biggest influencers of them all back in the day) carried her white B along with her new baby 2003 and then O.M.G quelle horreur, 'Posh Spice's' as a soccer WAG obsession during mid '00s, when she planned every RM Galaxy dress to match/co-ord her latest Birkin. Then the Ks and so on and so on.

One of the reasons I loved the K was because everybody was saying they were sooo 'old lady', including old ladies. My mother and her friends (UK/France) were from the gen that hated the snip-snap, hard-sided handbags of their mothers. I remember all my mother's hobos, big soft shoppers and Chanel chain bags. When I was carrying my BBK Sellier in London, an art dealer friend, about the same age as my mother (and Jane Birkin) said how much she "hated those bags". I rather enjoyed everyone young and old hating my Kelly, now every bl**dy influencer has one  and made them fashionable.

I totally get you. I've always had the contrarian (is that what you call it?) personality even when I was young. I was reading Harry Potter before people in my school knew who he was. When every other teen/kid started getting obsessed with the books I literally stopped reading HP. I think I got to the 3rd book before I stopped. lol

Maybe that's also why I also gravitate towards less popular designs as well such as the Plume and Bolide. I still would want a Kelly someday, though, because a regular sized (28 or 32) Kelly Sellier in leather and canvas just hits different <3

In fashion marketing-speak, you're an early adopter: i.e. the one who sets the trends

That used to be what 'influencers' were about. However, I see many professional influencers askew the title that describes their power and instead prefer the supposedly more benign 'content creator'.

There's a quite few great reasons for preferring the Bolide and the Plume, but 3 of them make the models cheap-rent influencer proof.

1. Doesn't matter if closed or open, there is no visible logo discernible to the would-be casual glancer.
2. You have to be an advanced H-lover yourself to spot them.
3. Lack of eye-catching (flash) metal, which is often quite seductive for new-2-luxe eyes.

I love both Bolides and Plumes in part because they really are under the radar. The Bolide shape is also used by so many other brands and most people can’t tell the difference. The plume sadly I don’t see many of in the wild and they seem to be gradually vanishing from the lineup of bags Hermes makes each year. I wonder if it’s just that the shape isn’t currently popular or if it’s more that it’s not recognizably Hermes to most people so less people ask for it in the stores.

I’ve tried, but I’m a member of the non-influenced, UTR, bigger bag carrying tribe, and a boutique bag is rarely an option. Still, I carry on, wandering in the quieter corners of the marketplace in search of treasure

It costs as much as a Birkin so people who'd want just one Hermès bag usually go for what the brand is famous for. It also probably takes as long to make so H wants to redirect those man-hours to make something more people would buy.

When Leila Menchari was still in charge of the windows at FSH, various Plumes would always be featured on display alongside HACs. She took advantage of the big front and back panels to put embroidered, feathered, reptilian, metallic, floral surfaces on them.

I admit that Sex and the City episode was my influencer:lol:. But it took me 20 years to get one.

That’s the good thing about living in a small town: no one carries H! And few even know H bag models. For many H is a perfume brand, no kidding.

I actually like that lots of beauty influencers bought (or got sent) Hermes beauty products, and many influencers had heard the name but it's just another brand to them. They seemed to rate the products more honestly than the ones that fawned over the logo.

I bought the lipsticks because I like the actual lipstick, colours and the cases. I never got sucked into buying everything (subsequently) because there is just better out there at that price-point.

I have a problem in that I like impractical closures and hardware, but I end up not using those bags in real life. The times I wear the typical serviette/briefcase bags that are hard to open on the go, which the kelly really is another interpretation of, I usually end up considering wearing another smaller crossbody bag too. Which may end up looking ridiculous. My most used H bag is actually a very neutral briefcase bag that closes with a zipper on top and has no hardware.

H just rotate their new/reissue bags as fashion dictates.

They brought back the Plume 32 in fabulous colours in 2014, and then issued the mini with the strap that was very popular.

Before 2014 I was miffed the Plumes hadn't been around for a few years. Wait long enough and H rereleases most things. They should re-release the Paris Bombay - another wonderful and elegant design.

Theses logo inside bags will never be influencer fodder though.

Contrary to what has been shared by posters, the Kelly is still one of the chicest bags to own
& carry, JMO
Personally have never been caught up with all these influencers. I take more than half of what
they say & do with a grain of salt.
Most bags have peaks & valleys over time... the Kelly has a pedigree like no other bag
& I love wearing mine & seeing others wear theirs
