The texture difference is quite apparent here and so is the price difference.

Hope this helps!

It helps a lot. I thought that was the difference between alligator and croc, but I know that sometimes some croc looks more like alligator. I've always been confused about that. Now I know, it is the caiman look that I'm not drawn towards.

The difference between alligator and crocodile is quite small for the most part...

Most of the premium hides are from the stomach however sometimes the back of the animal is also used (which has the thick plates) even on alligator). As seen on this hornback alligator Delvaux bag. 1653523969175.png

And there you have it, I didn't buy a bag at all. I ran into this beautiful pair of Tod's alligator loafers that were exactly my size. I LOVE Tod's loafers and these were too nice to pass. They just arrived and are in exceptional condition. They are JP Tod's, so i believe they were made before 1997. The original owner kept them happy in shoe trees so their shape is perfect. They also came with the original, velvet dust cover. There are a couple of tiny damages, but I don't mind. I think my cobbler can repair. They fit like a glove.

Magnificent shoes.

Damn, that's an amazing price and condition. Enjoy!!

Yeah, it's funny, I was not looking for shoes at all! But because I occasionally get a hankering for an exotic, my search put these under my nose. The original owner bought them at JP Tod's on Rodeo in LA for $5k in the 80s or 90s and kept them in as near to new condition as one could imagine.

It has totally satiated my taste for a little exotic in my closet.

For now....

Nah you just started down the slippery slope ;)

It's not my first piece. Many years ago I had a Michael Kors snake bag that I loved. My cobbler ruined it (long and dumb story). I also have a tiny Suarez frame bag that I found in a Chicago thrift store that I still have and love but it's dressy and has limited use (but will never sell). And I have a Faulchi bag that is great for an every day bag, but not me at all. I think about selling it, but my daughter might want it some day so I hold onto it. Every now and then, I get the itch to find the perfect exotic.

So, yeah, I'm on the slippery slope. It's just been a slow ride.

I'm so glad! My MK purple snake bag was certainly a favorite. Just beautiful and nice to touch.

I had mine reglazed and it was never the same, it came back dull and rough to the touch. I asked the cobbler if he could do anything to correct it and he yelled at me for daring to ask about his work. It was the craziest thing. I was going to rip him a new one on Yelp, but then saw that many people already did, so didn't bother. He probably has mental issues. I decided not to pile on.

I also decided to cross town to use a different, kinder cobbler. The yelly man will never get one more cent out of me.
