i live in toronto...it gets pretty cold here but not like montreal. im generally the type of person who gets warm fairly easily so im never too worried about the cold...

in terms of coats, i have tons but the one i always wear is my Soia & Kyo which i purchased last year but they have a modified version this year http://www.soiakyo.com/app/webroot/shopfall11/index.php?menuby=fab&langue=en&devise=CAD&genre=F&coll=FW11&cat=down&dets=JENNA&detsc=1&pg=0

the collar makes it upto my ears, and the hood is super toasty. last year i wore the jacket on the fabric side, this year ive been loving the shiny side (its reversible). it's 70% down, 30% feather and plenty warm for me. i purchased it for $350 but i've seen lots of soia&kyo jackets being sold at Winners for amazing prices under $300(not sure if there's a Winners near you).

@Hessefan: i'm dissapointed to know zara coat are not the best quality. i will follow ur advice on buying a longer lenght coat

@natters: it's a pretty coat, i will try to find it in my local winners store. thx a lot

it's inevitable that i will have to spend a fortune on good winter coat to survive in montreal weather...

also, in montreal, i see everyone wear parka instead of mackage, canada goose, etc. do you think it's warm? anyone has an idea where to buy a parka
i found one in american apparel but i don't know if it's warm enough

Probably not warm enough, id say the thresh-hold of that one would be arround -2C before it was too cold to wear it.

Get a Canada Goose, Mackage or The North Face.

How long are you going to be in Montreal???

Id recommend some of theese;
Bloomingdales:

Saks:

Those would all work.

But if you want something else, Abercrombie & Fitch or Hollister also have some good down coats for decent prices, they may look a bit more "urban trendy", than what has been suggested, but they will keep you warm enough, just.

everyone is suggesting a name brand. but it's really expensive.
plus i realized that i'm mostly indoor all the time because i go often downtown and they have a tunnel that connects everything
and i'm dying in my pajar shoe
plus what i found interresting is that most people wear a wool coat.
i know they must be freezing outside and because of that they spend most of their time indoor. but i'm tempted to buy one because it's cheap
i'm stuck. i spend most of the time indoor and i do want a warm coat but it's not ideal to have it around indoors

i personally prefer down over wool...you mentioned that you are indoor most of the time...having to lug around a wool coat would be heavy! also, wool is not water resistance, hence if it starts to snow or rain, your wool make not hold up.

I would recommend Parajumpers as the warmest coat, I have Canada goose and mackage in puffy and wool types but the pjs is definitely the warmest, get a long / mid length one not the bomber style for sure.
