Hi, I opened a similar topic, live in Chicago, and although the temps are not as low as in Canada, wind makes it very cold. I recently bought NorthFace Triple C and it wasn't as warm as I expected so currently I am on a search for a new coat.

But from my research, look for a longer down coat, with fill 700, and of course make sure to try it on and see if its warm enough. Its so cold here already to test it, all I do is go outside and spend a few minutes, and I can see if it will work. Good luck, I will let you know if I find a perfect one.

What works great for me for NYC winters is my full length hooded shearling coat. A little more practical than fur for the subway and protects well from the wind.
Granted, it's not as cold in New York as in Canada but we've had some pretty cold days too and I was very glad I had my coat.
I also like Burberry down coats: warm, lightweight, and stylish. Also, someone posted Mackage, I second it, just make sure it's a down filled style, not poly filled.

I lived in northern Ontario for seven years, and I never once saw anyone wear a fur, so I'm not convinced that they are all that practical.
OP, the thing that makes all the difference in really cold winters are layers. The more you layer, the more your body warmth will be trapped between the different layers and the warmer you'll be. So, as some posters suggested, start with really good base layers, then whatever sweater or cardigan you wear, then a lining under a shell (such as thick fleece), then your shell coat. A wool coat like the one you posted won't be enough, unless you layer lots, and even then it will probably get wet in the snow, though I'm not sure how much time you'll be spending outside.
The first time a friend took me shopping for a fleece and shell I laughed at her, because I could not believe that those would be enough in -45 degrees. However, I had a 45 minute walk to school every day and was never cold. Also make sure you cover your head, because much of your body heat gets lost through your head.

For those tempratures, you need a Canada Goose. However if you dont like their style or for what ever reason, a North Face is a close alternitive or id recon that a Moncler or a Parajumpers may be the way to go.

Yeah I would go for a long northface parka with a hood and 700g fill. I'm sure there are other good brands but that's the brand I always use. I think it's more practical than fur. I wouldn't worry about how cute I look when it's that cold, I just do whatever I need to do to stay warm. Everyone is too cold to look at what anyone else is wearing anyway, haha. I know I never notice how anyone looks unless they don't look like they are warm enough, then I notice and think they are silly.

I am always so cold that a down coat isn't even enough sometimes. One thing that I have been using is an electric heated vest. It is honestly gods send for someone like me. If your body isn't already generating enough heat, any layer that you add on top is only going to trap in the heat that you already have, but not create more. So I'd wear the vest with a down or wool coat over to trap in the heat. I went with the vest instead of the jacket version so I can still add layers under and over it without too much bulk. I have also found it to be very convenient when I'm shopping in outdoor malls. I just turn off the vest when I'm inside and turn it back on when I go out. This way I don't need to keep on taking off and putting on my coat every time I go in and out of a store.

If you say you don't want to spend a fortune, there are TONS of good non-designer coats for less than 200$. All the other posters have given designer names, which probably is not what you're looking for.
Honestly, ANY of the good puffer coats will keep you warm. That DKNY wool coat is for something like +5 to +10 degrees C. You won't survive in that.
As for what others have mentioned regarding fur... no offense, but clearly they're not Canadian. I'm serious, people will laugh at you down the streets if you wear a gigantic long (or short) fur coat for daily use. In all my years living and growing up in Montreal which is one the coldest cities in Canada, I've NEVER seen one person wear a fur coat everyday. People only wear fur for special occasions or dinner parties around the holidays. Not only is fur impractical, it's even more expensive than Moncler, Mackage, Canada Goose, North Face....etc.

Seriously, just go to The Bay for affordable coats that will keep you warm. They have a very decent selection

Agree with what you said!

Yes, especially the head! We lose 20-40% of our body heat from our head, why? because we have 7 HOLES there leaking out heat!!! Cover your head, ears, mouth and don't talk with people. Talking = major insensible heat loss!!! :p

Probably the best advice so far.

You need a good down filled coat with as much insulation that you think you can get away with.

Theres plenty out there for not that much in monetry terms.

Jep, so true! My father in law is a scientist and goes every year on an expedition to the antarctic or/and artic sea, no one in his team is wearing fur *lol*
they keep layering the cloth and keep their head and hands covered all the time.
A good down filled coat will do. And get warm gloves where you can wear light cotton ones underneath.

Yeah, exactly! Another good point is to just keep active outdoors.

I used to figure skate and we wore basically one layer of thin clothing in -5 degrees on the ice rink. And I was SWEATING from all the jumping and spinning!!! As long as you're doing something, whether you're running outside to catch the bus or walking your dog (who are fine in the cold as well lol), you won't freeze to death!

Hence why the Antartic scientists are given Canada Goose jackets to get to and from and operate with whilst at the Amundsen Scott base there at the South Pole, they are only given one colour, Red tho as you can see red from miles off there.

Good points, about Activity, as with my Canada Goose Chilliwack i can get away with just a T Shirt underneath and it could be -5C outside and id be fine.

If the OP goes for a good quality down jacket, they will be okay with regular clothing underneath. If they get one stylish enough as well, they could also get away with wearing it to and from a party or function with a sexy dress and heels on. If they want to go without a down jacjet, then the only other option is Under Armour Cold Gear on, whitch just isnt flattering on the body.

Im trying to get Canada Goose to make a version of my Chilliwack in a vest format at present as that with some Under Armours will be enough for the cold days that are arround freezing here in the winter for when i go power walking. As the heat will go out my head and out via my arms as well.

Choosing the right jacket/coat/vest is important to me in the winter as it can decide wether or not you will have a good day, as you dont want to go to work feeling cold or come home from work cold as it means you could have a poor days performance at work, or just not get a good enough sleep whitch has a knock on effect on the next day.

In winter, a quality piece or pices of outer wear can and will make a difference to you.

Being from Scotland, i have about 5 or 6 pieces to choose from from my Canada Goose to a shower proof jacket as well.

I know that some down jackets might not be stylish enough, but there are some that are, The North Face has a good few now (Greenland Jacket & Artic Parka are just 2) and theres Mackage, Woolrich, ADD Down, Moncler and many many more out there that do stylish down jackets.

Even when the temprature is slightly warmer you can wear a down jacket well, as if its up to say arround +10C you can wear it with a T Shirt or top simply unzipping it and still looking stylish. Keeps you warm enough for the street whilst keeping you cool enough to wear it.
