As someone who recently purchased a diamond for the Platinum engagement ring I got for my girlfriend. One of the first things I did was a lot of research, and I came across GIA. When I purchased the diamond I made sure that it came with a GIA grading report. They are the most impartial and accurate reporting out there. The only agenda they come with is to ensure that the consumer is getting a quality graded diamond. Buying an engagement ring is a big step in my life and I wanted to make sure I was getting the best. I would also say you can go down in clarity to S!. Look at a lot of stones and see what qualities are most important to you. Some people are more color sensitive then others so you may prefer a warmer or whiter stone in person. For me personality, Cut comes first since thats what gives the diamond a sparkle and fire and I also prefer icy white diamonds in color and would sacrafice clarity, as long as I couldn't easily see inclusions with my naked eyes, for a whiter color...some people may prefer to do the opposite. I would try to find a really great cut as the first priority though.
The strictest lab is AGS. It has much narrower range of top rated round brilliant stones than GIA. AGS 0 diamonds can be more difficult to find, but are worth it, depending on your criteria for an engagement ring
