Some of you may know that my Mom died nearly a month ago. DH's uncle, instead of sending flowers (I told him it was ok not to), sent me a check in order to buy something to remember my Mom by. To make a long story short, I waited 20 years to see a real hummingbird. When I lived with her, I tried everything to attract them--to no avail. I gave up when I moved here. The week after Mom died, I came down with a bad case of bronchitis and a stomach virus. I was feeling very low. I had just gotten off the phone with my neighbor, who called because she was worried about me. We had talked about hummingbirds. A minute after I hung up, I looked up, and saw a Ruby-Throated hummingbird (female, with a white throat) outside my window! I was elated! She comes around to the feeder many times each day, and always makes me smile. You may think this is crazy, but I do think God and/or Mom sent her to me as a gift or sign. I love rubies, and it's my birthstone. And, with the sore throat I had that day, MY throat was ruby-red (but inside, LOL). The poetic Spanish term for hummingbird is "Joya voladores"--flying jewels. "Joya" means jewel, and Joy was Mom's nickname.
I've been trying to find the perfect hummingbird necklace to honor both Mom and Joya (the bird). I stumbled across this on Etsy today, and bought it. It's hand-made by a local artist--(dyed) pale green pearls, and a sterling, hand-fabricated, hand-enameled pendant. The artist named it "Tiny Warrior". My brother told me that Mom, in her last couple of days, "fought [her cancer] like a warrior". Mom was also very petite. I think the name is appropriate, don't you?
