How to read Hermes Date Stamp?

Actually, that's not quite correct. S can be used as part of the craftsman's stamp and sale bags are marked in a different place than this stamp.

Really? Because my friend had a senior position at Hermes, albeit in jewellery, and told me this. It's not just on bags, it's on any leather goods.

The S can be part of the craftsman's stamp, as are many other letters. It does not mean the bag is a sale bag. Sale bags are not stamped in the same place as the craftsman's stamp, generally, but on the front of the bag, where the Hermes stamp is.

Yes, if course because S could determine the year. And I did say, when S is stamped away from the other blind stamps, it is a bag for staff/sold to staff. Just repeating what a friend told me. I also have a croc CDC, bought from a great Parisienne reseller, with the S stamped by the Hermes sign, away from the craftsmens blind stamps.

The CDC S doesn't have anything to do with the craftsman's mark (or sale, generally) and employee bags are not stamped with an S but with a sequence of numbers, actually.

S can determine the year; generally it is part of the unique craftsman's number, however, when it is used.

Jumping in here to help with the S question!

If the S is in a square or a circle, it will designate the year. A few years to go before we get to the "S" year!

The S, when tied in with the other date stamp numbers, simply is part of the date stamp.

Some countries mark bags differently when they are sold to staff. For some time there was the tradition of adding a code of numbers that was distinct from the other marks. I have heard of recent cases where this has no longer been done.

The the case of the CDC described, where the S was near the Hermes name, it indicates that this was sold at the Hermes sales. Most likely it was sold to a customer shopping the sales, as these tend to sell out at the start of the sales. After the last day of the sale in Paris, there is a Sunday when staff can shop. I doubt anyone has time to run around re-marking the sale remnants--so it could have gone to staff. But the important thing is to know that the S, where it was places, means the item was a sale item.

The use of the letter S to denote a sale item is the normal method used. The S is always placed away from the date code and the year stamp. There may be a few exceptions, but they happened many, many years ago. Even then the S was in a different font and style and easy to spot.

Bottom line. If you see the letter S by itself, it means the item was a sale item. As part of the date stamp, it does not indicate a sale item. S stands for "soldes" or sales in French and is used on every item to indicate the sale origin. This protects the store from return/exchange requests. I have been to the sales annually for many years and have seen fascinating S stamps!

^^That said, my only question/uncertainty involves the CDCs. I am trying to look at some online and see "s" marks in a corner. One possibility is that this might indicate size, though Hermes normally marks items as PM,MM, GM and so on, using French words. Possibly a size mark for the US/Canadian/British markets? I am sure someone knows.

Honestly i don't think it is size....but I am not expert
I recently recieved blue electric CDC with GHW and it was ordered by my
SA especially for me and it came with s and you are
right there are many floating around with s. this is being seen with new
crop of CDC

After making it to about 20 sales in Paris...I was so used to the S mark hiding somewhere in every item, set apart. Other than the CDC mark, my comments should actually be correct!

But I clearly have a little research project with the S and the CDC...

Thanks!

My CDC came from the store and has the s mark; it is definitely not a sale item (wish it had been!)
mine too and i did not pay the sale price and mistikat if i may ask have you noticed that nowdays the plastic on CDC is not applied neatly it is untidy and i saw couple of bracelets on e bay and did not buy because thought something looked off because of plastic but i got several CDCs since then from store and h.com and their plastic was exactly how the e bay CDC had.....maybe this need to be clarified as on authentication thread a CDC i wanted to be authenticated was given red signal because of s stamp as discussed above and plastic........just wanted to run this by you:smile1::smile1:

I bought all my CDCs in US. If I'm not mistaken the S stamp on CDC (up left corner) referring to the size, S for small. Because once I bought a Cdc in large size before from H boutique, it has L stamp indicating for large size (usually for men or anyone with bigger wrist). Hope it helps.

I had no idea Hermes sold small leather goods in their sample sale! All this time. I'm going to go to the next one and not pass on the invite to someone else.
