i put my ring in a Jewelery Sparkles solution i buy at BIrks once a wk or more if it looks smudgy
i get it cleaned at birks when i buy solution every couple months or so) and they look at the prongs at that time. i only leave it w someone for an appraisal. cleaning only takes a few mins so they shouldnt need ot hold onto it.

i clean it 3x/week...
how?
i use a glass cup, hot water, a little liquid dish soap and a new small concealer brush...
i just pour the dish soap, warm water in the glass cup, swirl it...
and plop my e ring in...
wait for a couple of minutes...
and then carefully take it out...

then i dip my concealer brush in the soapy water...
and gently scrub the diamond...
then i just rinse it with warm water and pat it dry with a clean towel....
TADA!!!!!! its shiny again! :happydance::happydance:

but i was adviced to go to my jewelry store every 4-6 mos to get it steamed cleaned & have the ering checked

Wanna laugh at me? I have a complex. I clean my rings at least 1 time per day, using one of these three, usually the latter two unless it's GROSS from dunking it in sometihng.

1) a baby toothbrush or the little brush that came in that red jar of death, plus 91% alcohol from the drugstore. I pour a little alcohol into the cap, and dip the brush in it, and scrub the hell out of it, a few times. Then I dry with a qtip (PSers this is the same as Kenny's method!)

2) I use SparkleSparkle spray for Platinum (buy gold if you have gold/whitegold rings) and the same brushes mentioned above. You can get the spray from nventa.com

It's the bomb.

3) If I have dunked my rings in food or something (which I often do as I am left handed), I nuke water til nearly boiling, and make two little pyrex dishes that both contain a capful of Mr. Clean and a little ammonia. I fill 2/3 the glass dish with the hot water to dilute the cleaners. Then I soak my rings in there for about 20 min. Then I scrub all the gross gunk out with the above brushes, rinse with hot water, and then do option #2, and scrub it more to be sure every nook is clean, then dry with a paper towel, which I twist the corners of to get under the stones, and a blowdrier to make sure it's totally dry. If there's any speckles I use a qtip with alcohol on it and dry again with the dry qtip.

If it's REALLY gunked up from food dunking, I steam it, then put in my ultrasonic, then resteam it. Then use #1 or #2 from above.

I even carry a small kit with me in my purse for any necessary cleanings during the day that is a small bottle of alcohol and a little brush. I also carry a 30x loupe with me, and have another at home. Each gets louped daily.

I have a guarantee with my engagement ring and it has to be cleaned & checked every 6 months. If its dirty inbeween that, I just use soapy water and a childs soft toothbrush to clean it.

Wait wait wait...
When Platinum is polished metal IS NOT removed. That's incorrect. What I said is that Gold and White Gold loses metal. Platinum is only moved, displaced, when it's "scratched" and polishing it puts it back. No metal loss with platinum. However if you like the patina, that's a reason not to polish it. I personally prefer my platinum be perfectly new looking, I don't care for the patina.

I don't know how heavily detailed your ring is but if you aren't familiar with this jeweler, I would not be leaving it overnight. If you can't send it to or take it to the original maker, that's a little different. I send my rings back to their makers for almost anything, including polishing.

I'm glad you said that b/c that's what I'd heard too! I just got mine at Tiffany's and asked how often I could have it polished without damaging it one day and he said "not over your lifetime, anyway." He said I could polish it every couple of months easily and that with platinum it is just moved around, not stripped off. One reason to be happy I got platinum!

WOW girl! That's quite a routine!!!

I clean mine 1x a day in gemcare and water in my little ultrasonic cleaner and if it's really gunky use a toothbrush - shines almost like new!!

Thank you for your information, ame! I am a platinum lover. I am glad to know that.

Do you guys know if there is any damage that can be done by cleaning your ring too often? I read someplace that you should only do it every 2-3 months. I probably do mine or have it cleaned every month. While I can't see the harm in this if you are using the correct method I am wondering if any of you have heard otherwise.

LOL it is, I just cannot stand when stuff is on it. Im a freak show about it.

Platinum is a hardy metal. It is soft but it's dense and can take abuse very well.

Cleaning will not harm the ring, I clean my rings daily. The only issue that could pose any sort of problem is when a white-gold ring owner uses something overly harsh (ammonia, etc) to clean theirs. Or if a bristle from a brush dislodges an already loose stone or an ultrasonic jiggles out an already loose stone. Steaming can be harmful to many softer gemstones but it's not harmful to the metal or the diamonds.

POLISHING is different. It won't harm platinum, but it will wear down white gold and gold over time, as every time gold is polished, a little of the metal is scraped off, and eventually you'll lose so much metal that the ring loses it's structural soundness. That is something that should be done every 3+ months, as needed, and some folks don't like to polish it, so they never do.

I bought the sparkle sparkle stuff that AME uses because I had seen so many posts were she wrote about using it, I just had to try it for myself. I have to agree with her that the stuff is amazing. I do not know why it is so special (before that I had been using tiffany cleaner, 91% alcohol, and a toothbrush), but my ring sparkles like crazy. I did my future sister-in-law's ring and she said that even days later it was still sparkling like crazy. I had never heard of the stuff before but I am so glad that I did and that I bought and tried it for myself.

Anyway, back to the subject of this thread. I have my e-ring cleaned and checked whenever I am at the mall. It is from Tiffany's. It usually takes 10 minutes, very rarely they have been backed-up and told me that it would take longer, like an hour, and depending on what I came to the mall for I might leave it or just wait until the next time I am at the mall. But, a week sounds kind-of fishy to me. Is this the place your ring was purchased from?

Sorry this is OT, but dear surfergirljen, I am still waiting for a reveal on your new upgraded Tiffany ring!! Pretty Please!!

So glad you like this stuff!!!! It's seriously the only positive thing that came from my Whiteflash experience, since they would include it when you got your order. I am addicted to it. I love it so much.

I THINK she posted some pics, but I think it deserves maybe a new thread??? :yahoo:

I buy Plat because all of my rings are Plat, but Id go with gold since you have a white gold ring. The gold works better for rings that were rhodium plated (white gold) and will still do a great job on your Plat.
