How much money do you have before buying a $2000 bag?

Thank you guys! I actually have enough cash, I even have cash for a Birkin -- I'm proud of this. I really like the bag, but I never spend that much money on simply a bag. Thus this is a big decision to me.

And another concern is that people always tell themselves: enough if I could buy this bag. However I think people will never reach this "enough" status. If I buy my dreaming alma bb, I may have another goal such as Miss Dior few months later. This is unacceptable... I'm not rich enough to buy a luxury bag each term.
I've been reading Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas.
I highly recommend. It really puts a lot of things in perspective WRT the price of "luxury" and what it's worth, particularly as it relates to the way things are manufactured and provides a deeper understanding of the fashion house empires.

There is also an excellent quote in the book: "He is poor who does not feel content." - Japanese proverb. Seems very apropos, no?

Hi guys, I start to follow a tread today which is about a eBay seller Japan_monoshare. It looks like lots of tPFs would buy from them and I saw one posted that she bought a like-new speedy for only $200+. I really get shocked seeing the pics of the bag.

I agree with the posters who say you will get a ton of varied opinions on this. Everyone lives differently. The only commonality we have in this forum is we all love some sort of handbags.

I'm a saver. I like wealth. So my answer would be on the waaaaaay conservative end. LOL!.

That being said, I would say at a minimum, don't have handbags that cost more than you have in your most basic cash savings (let alone your investments). $2k in bags means at least $2k in cash savings. $50k of bags means at least $50k in cash savings. And hopefully, an even better ratio! .

Why have a bag when you don't have money to carry in it?? 😳

But that's me. Do what you think is best. 😊

Thanks :) Problem is that I have the cash but I still cannot make up my mind... And I've been hesitated for 8 months. I guess I will remain hesitation forever and ever...

DeepConvNet, IMO it sounds like you've got your act together and have excellent principles. After having purchased several high end and very costly bags, my favorite bag to date is believe it or not, a Coach!! I haven't stopped wearing this bag since the summer! It has all the criteria I have been looking for in a functional bag so I commend you in taking your time with making your decision as well as your respect for pricing. In the end, I've learned that the brand makes no difference. The status is conjured up in our heads. Anyone can pull off a Coach and be dressed to the nines! It's all about confidence and self esteem. Good luck with your excellent decision process! :okay:

Thanks! I'm really happy hear what you said. I should take a look at contemporary brands! I agree some Coach bags are so good :)

Beware of buying online - a lot of people get burned out of money from no good scammers who sell fakes. Get it authenticated here first!

There are also consignment shops sprinkled across town that will definitely carry LV - it is after all a very popular brand.

As for saving enough money to make large purchases - I think if you love it, buy it. Everyone has their spending vice - my FIL for example loves luxury cars (which is one of the most marked up items by thousands of dollars - more than handbags!) My MIL loves eating out five days a week which will add up over the course of a year.

My mother in her old age tells me that she needs to stop scrimping because my dad will spend it all anyway :lawl:

I don't want to be an enabler (I'm a firm believer of not hoarding and donating things I no longer wear), but you should do what you feel more comfortable with.

This! This! This! Yeah! I couldn't have said it better myself!

Also, there are very easy ways to save money - I know as a student it is not easy, but making smart choices going out matters. For example, the mark up on any sort of beverage at a restaurant (in the US) is a complete joke. $3 for a coke, $6 for a beer, $10 for a glass of wine, sometimes more... I never order soft drinks, tea, coffee, or alcohol at all. They are much cheaper to make at home or purchase at a grocer. While I lived in NY we all pre-drinked before heading out. Make a drink before dinner. That sort of stuff.

If you're still a college student, may I ask how you're paying for school? If your parents are wealthy and paying the tuition, that's great; are they also giving you an allowance? Do you work? I honestly believe you should have a nice cushion of money saved up before you splurge -- your first few jobs after school may be the kind where they take advantage of your youth and burn through workers, also you won't have loads of job security at that age. Just starting out after school is tough -- you need things like a bed and a coffee maker, lol! Makes little sense to me to have a $2,000 bag and come home to a mattress on the floor!

All I can say is that I had the kind of savings you had at your age and I'm SO GLAD I didn't blow 2K on a bag. That money is the only thing that allowed me to survive a lay off at 22, go to grad school, and start saving for a house.
