DSS does exist and the symptom flare up after 7 months for me. My finger sz is littler smaller than you... sz 4 and size up 4.25 for 2.0ct round . I got up May of last yr then in Nov looking for 2.87ct... i don't know what happened... somehow the rock seems to shrink to my eyes... yes... put your ring away for a couple wks it does help with DSS.

To answer OP... since sz 5 for finger.... solitaire 1.85ct-2.50ct is nice size for finger coverage.

Thanks for all your answers!

Interesting, most of you seem to prefer rings in the 2 + carat range.

At the moment, I'm thinking of getting a Tiffany's solitaire (around 1.3 - 1.5 ct). But, of course, for the money I could get a larger diamond somewhere else.

What do you think of this setting?

I know it's different from the Tiffany's one but I wonder if it is well-made and makes the diamond look good.

What do you think?

I just replaced a setting that had prongs like that. The center one was always rubbing or getting rubbed by my wedding rings and scratching both. It was really pretty though.

Oh, that's interesting.

I know you have the classic Tiffany setting now; do you prefer this or your old setting? Purely look-wise, not considering that you had problems with your old one.

I started with a 2.5 carat emerald cut which I loved, but for our 10 yr anniversary we upgraded my ring to 4.5 carat cushion cut with the micro pave setting. It is gorgeous! I get compliments on it everyday:)

We have a similar finger size, I'm 4.75 and my ring is a RB 2.7 carat whose measurements are more in line with a 3 ct. I love the size! And I will admit I am not opposed to bigger, lol. I used to have a 1.8 ct. princess cut which at the time (15 years ago) was considered to be a big ring. Truthfully, I like diamonds of all sizes, as long as they are well cut and super sparkly!

Purely from how they look, I liked the delicate cathedral and the high setting of the old one but not the shank. For the Tiffany one I like the knife edge but wish it was set higher, and it's already higher than Tiffany set stones. Equally pretty but different. Choosing a solitaire is confusing, the simplicity of them makes them beautiful, but hard to pick one.

Are you going to wear it stand alone without a wedding ring? I would have picked something more elaborate on the head if I wasn't wearing a wedding ring.

I plan on wearing it alone because stacking just doesn't look good on me - I feel my fingers are too short for it and more than one ring looks like a strange "mess" on my fingers, IDK. If you were wearing only the solitaire ring, what kind of setting would you pick?

I have different answers for different shapes. For round, oval, pear and marquise, I wouldn't go above 1.5ct. For emerald, radiant, cushions and asscher, I think 2-2.5 ct is the sweet spot. IMO, rounds are best smaller.

If you are looking at bluenile, this setting is more like the tiffany than the one you were looking at:

Thanks!

I'm mostly interested in round diamonds, though I have considered cushion cut ones as well.

I have seen this blue nile setting as well, but I'm wondering how it looks in real life? The prongs look a bit wide and large in the picture - is it really like that or does it only appear like that?

I do not wear an e-ring. But I have had a 2 tcw and 3 tcw. I have long, slender fingers (size 6) so the 3 tcw looked good.
Unfortunately/fortunately diamond strinkage does exist! Sometimes a setting can make all the difference.

What do you mean by "sometimes a setting can make all the difference"? Are there settings that "prevent" diamond shrinkage more than others? ;)

DSS exists .. When I got my ering I thought the .38 rb nearly colorless and flawless was just rocking my socks off.. Now I'd like to reset it in a halo so it looks bigger - I also would like wg over yg for more wow.

I have noticed that DSS kicks in overdrive when I am around other ladies with huge rocks. A friend of mine has a 1.5 rb that just makes me drool.

These days I have just been wearing a 4ct shared prong eternity band that was my parents with another band that is a half eternity pave set double row.

Wow. I would feel so self-conscious with anything bigger than 1ct on my 4.25 finger! I just don't see anyone with huge bling around here.

I also don't see anyone with large rings; in fact, most rings are well under a carat.

This is why I wonder whether DSS mostly occurs if you often see people that have (much) larger rings than you?
