we went to our local jeweler about 3 or 4 times and each time we were probally there with our jeweler for about 2 hours or so.....and everything i tired on i loved but it wasnt exactly what i wanted....so we stopped looking for a little bit just to take a break and like 2 days later our jeweler called and said he had found the perfect ring.....so we went in and it was perfect!!!

i would definatly go and try on rings to see what you like on your finger....that way you know what style ring you want...its so much fun getting to try everything on!

I have no idea because he picked it out himself. I told him that I wanted a pear solitaire, and that is what he got. My stone was set in another ring so he asked them if they could sell him just the stone and they were happy to do whatever he asked.

I am not engaged yet, but part of this year's Valentine's Day gift was a "gift certificate" from my BF allowing me to choose ANY setting I want. I've had a predilection towards eternity bands and round diamonds, but so far we've only gone into one jewelry store and tried on a few different styles. Based on that and research online, I think I am 75% sure I know which setting I want. Of course, I want to go look at other styles to eliminate ideas or get new ones too...

A couple of months, and then I bought the first ring I tried on! (Totally nuts I know). My first (and last ring) is a classic Tiffany round diamond in the knife edge setting. I tried on rings at Tiffany's, Cartier, in New York's Diamond district, Van Clef, etc. I tend to like more elaborate looks, but in the end decided that the Tiffany ring had the kind of simple chic that I like and went with everything.

hmmm....probably a couple of months, with days here and there. we had tried on rings for awhile just for fun or "research". DH then apparently spent some time studying up on diamonds (which i had no idea). when he had a hard time deciding exactly what stone and what setting, he brought me in on the buying process...which he says added "rocket fuel" to his hunting! i then did my own research once i found out how important it is, and it probably took us another 2-3 weeks to find a suitable stone and a setting that i loved it in. i always get compliments on my ring, and most people are always like "u picked it out yourself, didn't you..."i guess sometimes there's just a difference between what a man would pick and what a woman would pick!:D once we got the ring, had it appraised and insured, he waited another month to propose....

Have you tried each shape on yet? Trying them on may surprise you!

No, I need to go play with some rings! I've only tried on rounds, princess and radiant which I liked -- although they were HUGE. I was in the Cartier of Palo Alto and the salesman was beyond nice and let me play with rings Tiffany in Chicago doesn't usually let out of the case due to "insurance purposes." :wtf: If I were to buy a Cartier ring, which sadly I won't for now at least, I'd go back to that wonderful salesman!

i wasnt involved w/ the e- ring process..lol..hubby got down on one knee and proposed to me on valentines day..and there was the little blue box! lol..he did all the work/research/buying..although he did ask my mother for my ring size (so i kinda knew what he was up to) and about 1.5 yr into us dating, (we dated for 2 yrs..then he proposed) he asked me what shape of diamond i liked..it was totally out of the blue and i think it came up bc we were walking around and passed by a jewelry store..i causally mentioned "round." that was it!

You should visit Tiffanys in Oak Brook Mall. THere's this male SA there that looks like Tim Gunn from Project Runway whose super nice. I was dressed really plainly but just browsing thru the store when I stopped dead at the e-ring counter. He was so nice and just let me pick and choose and ask a bunch of questions. I played around with a few rings, mostly 1-1.5 carats though so I'm sure he was more comfortable with that! HA!

Actually come to think of it he URGED me to take a look and try them on. I knew I wasnt going to actually buy anything or hint of anything remotely Tiffany's, but the SA just wanted me to get a flavor I guess!

Hmmm....I would say about a month total.
FI knew I definitely wanted round brilliant cut because I am totally captivated by the fire & sparkle!
We designed my ring together. I had a folder on my computer of all rb's in small halo settings. We went to my jewelers & there was a beautiful 1 carat stone set in a split shank halo setting. I fell in love, but FI did not like the split shank because he said it woul look off balance with the wedding band next to it. I saw his point & really wanted his input. So we had the same ring made with one single thicker band, added some milgraining & hand-engraving....and voila! My dream ring!

I love reading everyone's stories!
