How do you rotate your bags?

Hi all! I am looking for some opinions! I just started ordering a few LV and Marc Jacobs bags that I like. The LV bags are all different; however, the Marc Jacobs are all the tote bag - just in different colors. I plan to use one at a time (for a few months at a time, probably), and then switch to a new bag when I get bored. I like the idea of carrying these bags as status symbols, something to be proud to show off! If I don’t get to use some of my bags for a few years, will they no longer be a status symbol, because they are ‘old’ and no longer ‘trendy’? Or are designer purses, such as these two brands, typically regarded as timeless pieces? I guess my worry is that they will never get used and just sit in my closet, but I really like them all and don’t want to have to narrow down my wish list!! Thoughts?

please use them if you love them, no matter if they remain trendy or not, they must be something that YOU love, not others.

I rotate my bags pretty frequently depending on what I'm doing and what I'm wearing. I use them as accessories and have a lot of fun swapping between them. I also change SLGs pretty often. It only works because I use very small bags and just have my phone, and a maybe 2 tiny slgs to switch out of. I see this as a treat and take the time to enjoy bags. It helps tell which bags I reach for most and which don't get used and need to go. My tote is a different story. I do enjoy switching out pouches and slgs in the tote too but keep that more consistent as that is for anything I need with me but won't carry around. I don't always keep it with me and it's often just sitting in the car.

Well, you’re who will wear them, and your opinion is the only one that matters. As for status, I’ve not considered that before, so I don’t know how to answer that. I hope you enjoy your bags though. 😊

I think the Marc Jacob’s tote is pretty timeless. But seriously, the Important thing is that you really like them all. You should enjoy them regardless of their age. Some of my favorite bags and RTW pieces are decades old. I like to mix them up with current pieces.

To answer the specific thread topic, I rotate by functionality and fashion. And, I give preference to a bag that I haven’t worn in a while. Sometimes I’ll carry a bag that hasn’t gotten much use for a number of days. Sometimes I switch out from day to evening. All of my bags are somewhat neutral so it is easier to mix and match. I hate changing SLG, so I strongly prefer not to do that.

I enjoyed reading this thread!

I have around 25 bags and the majority of them are for specific purposes so they hardly get used. Having young kids, I have trouble clearing out my big bag and keeping track of my stuff. There was a point in my life when I had my earbuds, tissue, allergy pills, chargers, women's hygiene needs neatly stacked in different SLGs and pouches. My bags got so heavy and when something comes out of a pouch I have trouble locating them back in. My bags are also not stored to be quickly switched so that's an issue too.

For now, day to day, i have been rotating between uniqlos mini round bag for quick errand then bal courier for sheer size reasons (I can just toss things inside and worry about them later).

In the event that on a whim I take out my any if my other bags, I'd end up using them for a few weeks because they happen to be sitting where they're accessible and all my stuff are already inside.

Ive been carrying the same navy crocodile bag for the last few weeks-I can’t post a picture as it looks very like a Birkin.
I May switch bags in the beginning of the new year-
I had an unused black leather bag , with a matching walket(which I’d considered gifting to my dear Niece), which I’d listed to sell, to make room for a new exotic bag.
When it attracted 15 interested buyers in less than a week, I realised that it couldn’t be that bad after all..I took it out of my closet ..I couldn’t replace it for the amount I’m selling it for, it’s actually a nice bag-it May not be Chanel or H, nor is it crocodile, but it’s actually a really nice bag, in a practical size, with a brand new wallet..
I think I’ll gift it back to myself instead of selling it(I think on PF we can get a little bit brainwashed sometimes)- there’s nothing wrong with it…

So I’ll carry the navy crocodile until the end of 2023, then change to the black bag for the beginning of 2024.

I’m planning a new bag next year, an exotic, but hopefully the right size, a bag which I’ll use for years and no regrets..

I switch my bags almost daily depending on my mood and what I wear and the daily needs. Sometimes I switch bags twice a day if I have plans to go out at night. Even 3 times a day. Same as outfits.
For instance I go to gym in a morning so it’s gym clothes and bags, then it’d be my work clothes and a work bag. And at night it can be a clutch or an evening bag with a pretty outfit!

Personally I don’t consider trends/in or out, I am so ‘all over the place’ in regard to bags, I have never met handbag I didn’t like haha!
I do try to use them all.

I try to consider the context and dress according—office, domestic travel, international travel, volunteering in urban area, errands, hiking/outdoor parks, beach, formal occasions etc
That way, I use the bags for different purposes and they all get ‘rotated’

The point being it’s ok to use your bags as you wish and there are so many ways to incorporate your bag collection into your daily life

As someone who has historically had a challenging time rotating bags, I’ve found this thread pretty interesting and informative. For the last month or so I’ve been trying a weekly rotation system and so far it’s working well. I usually look at the week ahead on my calendar on Sunday evening to see what appointments or activities are scheduled for the upcoming week. Based on that, I pick a bag or two for the entire week, and then repeat the process at the end of the week. I’m averaging about 2 bags a week. These are specifically daily wear bags. If there’s a special occasion or dressier dinner outings I might pick a smaller bag just for the event but my everyday bag continues being my main bag (or default bag) for the week. I don’t switch out SLGs — it’s too much work!

Sometimes I wear one for a few days, but I generally change bags every day.
First consideration is where am I going? Quick run to the grocery store? My HG Bag isn't even considered. For church/evening event - an evening bag. A shopping trip (mall) - crossbody, instead of hand carry.
Next consideration is how much I need to carry, so how big the bag needs to be.
Final consideration is matching my outfit and mood.

So much good information here. I usually have about 3 different sized 'everyday' bags on the ready in the cloakroom. Then I decide which one I am taking depending on what I need to carry. I also have a large wallet and a small wallet for smaller bags, but I am thinking of just moving all my payments on my phone so I won't need to carry any wallet.

I Did sell the black bag I mentioned earlier in this thread, I just love exotics too much.
I did buy a matte black Marc Jacobs mock croc bag, although I haven’t used it more than a few times yet, and a black sequin bag for Christmas.

I’ve been using the navy crocodile Raylowi bag a lot, but needed a change, and didn’t want to buy a new croc bag right now, so got out my Jimmy Choo navy matte alligator bag, which now must be my oldest bag.
I’m using that for a while, I also bought a new SLG.

I almost do the same but per season.

I come-up with some key looks/outfits aligned with the functionality I need > line-up 8-10 bags on the top of my piano > keep my main every day cross-body and a shopping tote at the foot of my bed.

Hopefully, everything works together.

Like you, if I suddenly go in an unexpected direction or get an unexpected invitation calling for a different bag, I can always try to dig something out.

This has worked for me for quite a while and I'm happy with it.

Perfectly put! Assembling the key looks and outfits, and having the bags of the season lined up and ready usually makes dressing up a breeze. I should add that I have a beater bag or two on hand for grocery shopping. During grocery shopping my hands often get wet from selecting fresh vegetables and produce and I don’t like to transfer this onto a nicer bag or on delicate lambskin leather.

I’m pleased at how well this rotation system is working. Although my collection isn’t large by tpf standards I was still not really rotating my bags well in the past. Now, by being more intentional and mindful about it and linking it to my weekly planning, all of my bags are getting to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine.
