How do you pick your HG bag?

Agree that your HG finds you, whether you can afford it in that moment or not. If it's a classic, it will still be around when you can afford it.

For me, it started with a shape. I am a classic duffel-shaped satchel girl at my core, so great satchels always get my heart pumping. I have other shapes for various needs, but my HGs are all classic satchels. I always feel at my best when carrying one.

Wow, all great answers.

I haven't been intuitively drawn to a handbag in that way yet. I always think I've found it, but then, after sitting on it for a month or so, I'll change my mind. Usually that's a sign that it's not really my HG... It just seems so hard lately, with the way so many bags and styles trend in and out.

I think I will have to go to stores in person (vs. online shopping) and start touching and holding different bags. I know I like bags with a teeny bit of structure, and I'd like something like the LV Speedy, but a "firmer" hold on the shape... and I want the kind of leather that smells good for a lifetime (you know that fresh leather smell? Seriously, yum!).

Good excuse to start frequenting the mall again...

An "investment" piece in my opinion should be the following:
1- Approptriate for your lifestyle.
2- The size must be proptionate to your frame.
3- The color and structure goes well your style.
4- Has a classic shape or a part of a designer's permanent line.

Btw: the ysl duffle bag and sac de jour are a part of Saint Laurent's permanent collection! The shapes are quite classic , unlike the antigona which's more of an IT bag.
Totally agree with this.

For me I am now only buying bags that are iconic, and truly stand the test of time. The shapes must be classic, and they must fit with my lifestyle.

I have focused on Chanel heavily in the last year, but these are the bags I consider iconic and HG:

1. Chanel classic flap
2. Chanel reissue
3. Lady Dior, medium (black lambskin with shw)
4. Hermes Kelly (red)

I am on #3 now. Next bag will be the Lady Dior. I never thought much about it until I saw a blogger (ninistyle.net) carrying the bag and I instantly fell in love. I think a lot of it's like love at first sight.

Don't know if I will ever feel comfortable pulling the trigger on the Kelly, but it's a dream. :)

Loved this too. Makes perfect sense.

And thanks for the tip on the Duffle vs. Antigona!

Never say never ;) I know that once I find my HG - I'd probably save a lifetime for it if I could ever own it and that's what it would take!! (Or maybe that's borderline insane...)

Great choices, I'm building my collection currently and only considering the iconic designs from premier designers ;) they're a great start and it's wise to get them first before they become astronomically expensive :D
Ohh the Kelly dream, I really want a kelly too as the ultimate classic piece of all pieces but it's more of a status bag, so I'm waiting for when I become a 30 something career woman so I can pull it off comfortably , maybe I'll get a Lindy for the casual looks ;)
