how do you do it?

you know a couple of people here brought up a good point. Just because alot of us own expensive bags, we (I should say, I) have purchased a few second hand bags from other PF members or on E-Bay through reputable sellers. I gotta say, if I don't slow down, I won't be able to afford luxuries anymore so alot of responsibility comes with the obsession. I gotta remember that I own my posessions - they don't own me.

(this thread has turned out to be very therapeutic! thanks for starting it Satine!!)

;)

I have no problem sharing that I have no money at all. I think I have said it before.. :smile1:
But, I also know that since I´m a student It does not matter what kind of bags I have. I look for practical or else I can´t use them for school and that is waist of money for me. I do wish for many designer bags, like the Paddington, but I also know that my time to have bags that costs a lot more then I can afford right now will come.. :smile1:

Ronja

Sorry, for the gramma, hehe.. :smile1:

don't forget you're far better off than many many people in this world... you have a roof over your head, have access to clean water, don't have to be hungry (this all I assume since you have Internet :p ). sure this forum is more of a "bling-kind", but don't forget everyone has her/his obsessions. some might be saving up somewhere else just to splurge on something (the phenomen of trading up http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EPFVAU/sr=8-2/qid=1149370880/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-1527133-9032632?%5Fencoding=UTF8 )

remember: it could always be worse...

How do you all afford a $500-$1,000 ever week (it seems) not to mention the very expensive clothes, shoes, accessories, etc.

I don't. My handbga purchases average more like once every 6 mos or more if you count back longer than a year. Also, I am not a clothes or shoes horse.
It's priority I suppose. Some people spend a buttload of money on cigarettes or other things. . . . .

And the house, car, vacations etc on top of that. I am very envious.

Well, we're not terribly young for one thing. . . but my DH has always been a saver. So we pay cash for cars, vacations, etc . . . and have never put less than 1/2 down on any of our homes. That's only because he has a gift for saving and choosing what to invest in. Not to mention having a pretty lucrative job.
But we choose to travel and live in nicer than average homes, and because that is how we prioritize. I do not and will never buy a designer handbag every week or every month, nor will I spend a fortune on shoes, clothes, etc. . . . that's just noy *my/our* thing.

I too often wonder how some of our members can substain such frivolous spending habits, but behind everyone of our front doors is such a VERY different way of living.;)
Maybe they eat Top Ramen every night to support their spending habit!

i'm 23 :smile1:

I suppose for me, i just assume the majority married very well. and i, on the other hand, didn't. We are young, but not wealthy at all. We get by. We have a nice car and take nice yearly vacations, but i can't go out to buy LV all the time. Once a year is it. And i was bad and put my 2nd one on my cc. If i wanted more, i'd have to sacrifice, and not get clothes or something. sucks.

It's so funny, cause i THOUGHT we were doing ok (though we still rent...so, ok is relative) and then i come on message boards, not just this one, and everyone has so much.

I guess my sin is envy.

Oh crap! I missed this post!
You're doing VERY well if you're carrying an LV IMO!!!!
At 23. . . let's see.. . .I was carrying a 3 yr old D & B and living in an apt and driving a Honda CRX. . . .
You're doin' just fine Sweetie! DO NOT try to keep up w/ tPF Joneses;)

i am still a grad student, heavily in debt.. hoping to grad soon n start work as a psychologist.. i know i wont make lots of money but i am hoping to have at least a stable job.. from there, i think my hand-bag obsession may start to die down a bit so i wouldnt have to have so many.... for this yr, i only want a paddy n my dior bag.. i could wait for the others next yr..

For me, i bet i could make millions being a stripper...hahahaha or a "host" in japan...i've read the stories, i know what can be made~!

I read a story fairly recently about a girl who became a "host" in Japan and disappeared. Seems they are encouraged to go on "dates" with the businessmen, and one of them killed her and buried her outside of his beach house.

That being said, I was like BL...flat broke during college and my twenties. I put myself through college and law school, and now I have given up law (for the most part) for a career that I love (teaching) because I have been miserable. Sure, it means I have to only buy the occasional bag rather than several in a short time, but the trade-off is worth it. Someone will always have more than you...and someone will always have less. Be happy with your one designer purchase a year. Many people can't even afford that. And I cut back in other areas (such as fancy clothes...I wear jeans and t-shirts mostly) so that I can put the majority of my extra funds toward a nice bag.

As for marrying well, I did...no, he doesn't make much money, but he's a great guy and I love him to death. That's what marrying well is about. Not the portfolio.

ETenebris, you are absolutely right. I "married well" too :)

hahah and....i will be 24 in a few months :P does that STILL make me young?? lol I guess i should be thankful (and i AM thankful) for what i have. I have tons of desinger shoes and bags, (just not the amount that some of the gals here have).

Though, i've always been an envious child...since i was little. I think right now i'm going through a slum and i just have to find who i am again. Give up these boards (slowly) and find new hobbies...

You are all great girls! thanks

I didn't buy my first "designer" bag (LV) until last year. I'm 49. I've worked since I was 16, and only recently have made the kind of money that makes me able to splurge on the occasional designer bag. Our house (and mortgage) are small, our cars are paid for, and I don't buy designer clothes or shoes, and shop the sales. My home decor is primarily from Target. Even now, my upper limit for what I can justify spending on a bag is $1200, and that kind of bag expenditure is only once every few months. I don't go into debt for my bags: though I may put them on a credit card to get the airline miles, it gets paid off at the end of each month. Bag purchases also come after savings and necessities.

I think you should keep in mind that most people won't post until they just bought a new purse, pair of shoes or is going on a vacation, etc. It's easy to get caught up thinking that "everyone" is "wealthy" because this forum focuses on material things. You only really see one side of a person, ie you don't know how many designer verses nondesigner purses someone has; you also don't know what sacrifices (if any) that someone has made to obtain them. You also don't know if someone is 100% truthful. (I'm not referring to anyone in particular ... I just remember there were a couple of people who have been caught lying on PF.)

So don't feel bad about yourself. You sound like you are doing great!

Have you ever thought about getting a part time job as a Sales Associate at either NM or Saks? I hear the employee discount is quite good. I live in Canada & we have a high end department store that gives you 50% off all merchandise. That's how my friends who are being paid crap can afford the guccis & LV they are carrying around.
