its her personal choice,a lot of people buy fakes, and don't worry were that money goes too,it often supports lots of other illegal things, unless people are really shown what that money supports, they will continue to buy them

just do what I do. Wait for a special occasion and treat her to a nice present. Doesn't have to be super expensive. Many of the top houses have affordable gifts.

I bet you that she will wear the heck out of whatever you buy. It never fails! Bite her with the bug. Soon after shell be doing research of her own.

I'm with you Baggaholic. I give small designer items as birthday presents to a good friend of mine. Sometimes, it's a small cosmetic bag and other times, a keychain (the coach keychain with a miniature leather version of a coach bag). I'm working my way up to Chanel.

I know that she appreciates her presents (or is at least a good sport to know not to say anything). I feel that if your friend knows how adamant you feel on the subject and wants to keep the relationship, why should she bring it up? Or you bring it up? It all depends on the kind of relationship you have together - My friend and I tend to disagree vehemently on politics and yet can put it aside to talk about other things. Moreover, since she knows how I feel about counterfeit items, she doesn't bring it up and if she had purchased counterfeit items (which I don't think she has), she sure hasn't worn them when we meet :)

I think the issue essentially comes down to respect.

buy her a copy of the book "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster"
Or tell her about the factories in China where they have young children working under horrific conditions. This can all be looked up, there have been a few documentaries on it.

^I agree. And I don't care if I sound shallow, but I would be embarassed to be out with a friend who has a fake bag. I have friends who carry fakes, and I do usually say something about it. They're still my friends and I love them for who they are. It's just that I'm not going to sit back passively and not speak up for what's right.

^^ITA, I have friends that think I am nuts for spending so much $$ on Chanels, but they don't carry fake bags. If they did, I would be totally embarressed and would have to say something. They are still my friends, and I love them dearly, but wouldn't be able to not say something. I feel really strongly on this subject and get disgusted everytime I see a stranger with one much less a friend. I really believe fake bags contribute to a lot of corruption in the world. It is more than just saving a few bucks on a bag.

I personally could not carry a fake...because I know it's fake! Personally, I can't carry one since I'm sort of a bag snob (haha) but I also do not believe in fakes since buying fake bags is illegal and encourages all sorts of "terrorism", trafficking, and child labor. Try going for the moral grounds on the basis of not carrying a fake. It's a bit more compelling than "design". :D

I personally agree with some of the ladies here...people who refuse to purchase authentic items often do not own a single designer piece.

A friend of mine who repeatedly tells me how silly I am and what a waste of money it is to buy designer bags/shoes and that she thinks most deisgner stuff are all overrated and not even that nice, etc etc. And then I bought her something nice (nothing crazy just a DKNY leather bag), she has been wearing that same bag everyday, and that bag is TINY and can barely fit her wallet and cell phone!! lol

So yeah, let your friend think whatever, but a lot of times I find that people just don't have a clue:shrugs:

I would also like to add that another friend of mine who buys authentic purses but will buy knock-offs for more high-end brands like LV and Chanel. She also thinks I am crazy for spending all that money on the real stuff and would often suggest "alternatives". I would always just smile and not say a thing. But after reading this thread today, I told her where all the money for counterfeit goods go to...she seems kind of flustered and she said she had no idea...I sense she probably would change her mind after the talk!!

:D
