Hi Doc,

I think I might have gotten too brave with my leather goods. I treated my Vert Olive Box Kelly Long Wallet with blackrocks and had great results. When I applied a layer of obenaufs it caused strange speckling and splotchy darkening. I had done a test spot and did not get these results. I am horrified! Will this go away? Can anything be done?

You can send this to a professional or if you feel confident you can try using Mohawk Leather Degreaser follow the directions on the can exactly...spray evenly and wait over night or at least until the power turns light yellow and dry before brushing off carefully with a soft hair brush...

Dear Doc,

I'm currently waiting on my black box kelly to get back from the H spa but i would feel alot better if it was waterproofed. Would i need to use both the blackrocks and obenaufs in order to waterproof the leather or could i just use the obenaufs considering it was just at the H spa?

Thank you :)

How old is the the bag? A bag which has been polished many times overe the years or has a lot of polish on it should be weather resistant as the waxes in the polishes repell water quite well...
If a bag is coming back from spa you will be undoing the spa polish work performed by H by applying another product such as Blackrock and/or Obenauf's LP. Certainly you can apply these products but you would be best to remove the polishes that H has applied first, then treat and then follow with polish at the end to get your shine up.

hi Doc, i have a gold togo birkin with darkened handles. Can H fix this with a Spa trip?
If I be adventurous, can I fix it with any of your brilliant techniques?
thanks!

Hello,
I really don't like trying to be specific with what Hermes will do at spa, however I do know they will put polish on your handles which will cover the darkened areas for a while then this will slip off and will need to be repeated. Are your darkened handles dirt? Oil? or lost color? Have you tried to clean them? If lost color then color could be replaced with dye although handles are a bit tough to do color work on if you have never done it before... Tell me a bit more...OK?

Hi doc thanks for your reply. I reckon it's a mixture of oil and dirt and just overall darker than it's normal color.
Will using blackrocks and mcguaire wipes help?

Thank you so much for your reply. The Kelly is nineteen years old but a new vintage kelly to me :P
I'm not so sure i'd want to undo H's work immediately but i'm guessing that at its age it has quite a lot of polish on it or atleast i hope. Any ways to tell?

Again Doc, thank you for the reply. :smile1:

Hello, no those products are not going to do the trick at all they will only drive more oil into the area and make the handles even darker you are going to need to clean them (try Meltonian all purpose cleaner and conditioner first and then have a look...if indeed the color has changed or been lost come on back and we'll do the next step... Otherwise you might be good with just a cleaning and some polish try Tarrago polish and color dye kits No.7 and/or No.9 sorry can't remember exactly which one might be a combination of the two to make a match for Gold Togo (use the chart)

I am a firm believer in removing old built up polish on a vintage bag and conditioning it well and then re-polishing..same goes for newer bags every year or so just to keep it healthy... But you should be fine if H has conditioned and polished it. I would not think you will need to do anything at this point...

Hi thanks for the advice. If I don't dye it, can I just buy the tarrago polish cream to cover up the darkened handles? Will that work?

Yes certainly, I would clean the handles well and then use the polish to tap apply with a small sponge on the darkened areas of the handles allow to dry and repeat and again allow it to dry...then buff..you should be good to go..repeat when needed.

So would you suggest that i continue this discussion in about one year on how to go about applying conditioner etc? :)

Thanks Doc
