Hi, can anyone speak to the experience at Shanghai Hermes? For example I see that the website has quite a few bags that I want. Is it possible to order and hold at boutique? How friendly are they to foreigners? And if I purchase at standalone SH boutique, can I get VAT refund? Thank you!

I can't speak to ordering online and holding at boutique, but I assume it's similar to other stores where they operate separately.

So far, I've had excellent service in SH, as has DH (when shopping alone). That being said, we are speak Mandarin so that might be more cause for the friendliness than anything else.

And yes, you can get VAT refunds at the boutique. IIRC, I only managed to get a cash refund, and not to credit cards of any kind, unlike in EU.

I think SH is so international that they'd be happy to help you with no problems. I think you can get refund if you choose to have refund at the custom at airport? You can ask the boutique. H boutiques can take foreign credit cards.
I think you might be able to score bags if you spend enough, hard to say about quota bags but you can try. Good luck!

Just wondering if anyone has any recent experience with pre spend and offers from the Shanghai boutique, especially for the non-locals.

Not looking for B/K options, but i have a few NQ and Constance items on my wishlist. Wondering if I would have better luck when I travel there for CNY later this month. TIA!

Something came up and we had to cancel our trip. A friend of mine went and visited one of the boutiques. She came away with the impression that they had stock (NQ & Q) in the back, they would be happy to work with her on her pre spend (aka help provide suggestions on items to procure towards the pre spend amount). She didn't, however, walk away with any definitive answers on specific spend ratio. They also mentioned that if the spec she was looking for wasn't available, they would call her as soon as they received it. She wasn't in SHA long enough to chance it.

thank you for sharing!

So just spent a week or so in SH and visited 3 stores (Plaza 66, IFC and Maison).

In a nutshell, they have great stock there including impressive Blue Box items. It’s more expensive as others have posted but if you hold a foreign passport, you are able to claim effectively 9% back at the airport on departure. Any refund amount above RMB 20k will be to your card, below is RMB cash.

As with everywhere else, how successful you are depends on the rapport with the SA. I had particular success in the IFC store so decided to concentrate my spend there. Having said that, the SAs in SH are much more open and straightforward than in the West and will readily tell you on what products and how much you need to spend in order to get bags. Since ratios are bag specific the process is more efficient if you tell the SA which bag you want (from those on display) or if you don’t see any that you like you can ask what they have in the back. Once the bag is locked down, just ask them directly how much you have to spend in addition to get it and they will tell you (along with what kind of products).

Given the prices are higher in SH than elsewhere, the best “value” strategy is probably to ask for rare bags as the ratios can be “reasonable”.

In my case, I managed to get a Mini Kelly Cheval de Bois and a Constance Tartan at an average ratio of 1.5 to 1 (bought a watch that was roughly 1.5x the price of both bags combined).

For context it was my first time at the IFC store and the first time I met my SA. Going forward she will keep me updated on WeChat regarding special bags and ratios etc should I like any.

Hope this helps.
