Yes - I have firsthand knowledge that people absolutely purchase random tidbits from the store to then resell in order to be offered a prized quota bag. I don't know if it's worth it. The math somewhat adds up.
Using easy numbers:
Well-known that the spend ratio for B25 is 3:1.
Birkin 25 price = 10k
You need to purchase 30k of merchandise to be offered a Birkin 25.

Let's say you purchase the following:
20k necklace -> you sold at 12k. 8k loss
5k bracelet -> you sold at 3k. 2k loss
2k blanket -> you sold at 1k. 1k loss
3k homeware -> you sold at 2k. 1k loss

Effectively, you spent 12k instead of 30k.
Then you finally are offered your B25 (10K)
Total net = 12k+10k = 22k

This is reasonable, and equivalent to the price of a B25 in the resell market. Along with building a relationship with SA, guaranteeing authenticity, and having the full in store experience.
Only thing is - it's not guaranteed you will in fact get your dream B25, and in what timeframe - not to mention the stress of selling and dealing with buyers.

***This is NOT worth it for resellers, because you can't mark the b25 much above 22k and expect it to sell.

some stores are less than 3:1 ratio I heard, a few stores only require a 1:1 spending ratio (I know, the word “only” sounds ridiculous lol)

In the US? Recently? You’ve heard or you’ve experienced? It’s definitely not an exact science or ratio and having a long standing relationship can also lower the prespend, as can going for a less desireable bag combo but prices for things are crashing, including the bags on resale (FB groups have several available B25s sub $20k prices just sitting and B30s+ don’t seem to be moving at all). Perhaps these sellers were breaking even or turning a slight profit back in the beginning of 2022 when everyone was ravenous but now it is definitely a losing game

Why do you think it is that resale prices are crashing?

It's an interesting point - the less desirable combos are definitely sitting in the sub20ks, but the desired neutral combos are still in the 22k+ range. Particularly in togo leather in EUC condition. I really don't think we'll see those dip. Just too many takers and too many wealthy enough people unaffected by the uncertain economic times.
Recently, I saw a black ghw kelly pochette sell on FP for 21k+tax.
The black/ghws Birkin 25s at 22k+tax go in a snap. Currently there is only one on the site and it's 28.5k. The ones marked at 26k and under I saw a month ago are gone.

I would expect a similar trend for etoupe/etain/GP/GT --- and craie/nata maybe even moreso.

I highly expect to see Chanel dip, though --I feel the clientele is one that would be affected moreso than H's. No facts or data behind it, just a hunch. Not to mention the weird marketing they are currently doing.

I heard that if you want to buy porcelain or dishes it’s now a 6-10 month wait and you need to put 50% down. Is this because of resellers grabbing these items to make their quotas to buy a Birkin or Kelly? I’m seeing more household goods being sold on Instagram. It’s very upsetting and suspicious. I like buying porcelain to enjoy in the moment not wait for it.

I joined a H Facebook group and I've noticed what to me is a weird trend. People are buying items only go turn around an attempt to sell them within hours. It's not small items either, just saw someone trying to offload a croc K wallet they purchased today. I can only assume they are doing this to increase their spend to try and be offered a quota bag. But it just seems weird to me, I also feel like it's a trend which could explain chronically low stock levels.

How does everyone else feel about this kind of behaviour?

Perhaps reading this thread might be helpful? ;)

As per @Meta

there are also many threads that might be of interest via search function with respect to reseller behavior and the response of premier luxury brands like Hermes and chanel :). You can also use the word ‘flip’ in your search key words to pull up more threads.

I saw that post and I’m curious though, does spending at Paris airport help with prespend? I assumed it would have to be at the boutiques. I’m guessing that maybe she wants to sell at retail price (tbh I have no idea what a Kelly wallet is worth on the resale market) so she at least takes advantage of the VAT difference?

She pretty clearly states she’s trying to flip for profit. Exotic wallets are fairly easy to source from the store though so I’d think someone would have to be a fool to buy it from her. :shrugs:

Just personally I wouldn't buy something I didn't want for myself just to sell for profit. I think part of the magic of any purchase (luxury or not) is finding something you want in store and getting to experience that excitement. I feel like this seller took that opportunity from someone else and to me that's sad.

I really cant bear to sell my FJ at 50% off. While it reduces my pre-spend, I also dont own the pre-spend items I like or enjoy. I'm not sure if it makes sense. My apologies if I have gone off topic. Moderator, pls feel free to delete.
