Hi
Hope you’re well.
I know where you’re coming from.
Im guessing you’re based in Dubai UAE. Well I’ll give you some insight on the previous system and current system of Middle East.
so basically I’ve been a regular client since 2011 in Dubai. They had wishlist system back then. Most of mine and my sister’s B’s and K’s were scored by waiting for a year and so, eventually got offered in our prefered colour , hardware and leather.
However this system did not require premium spending on other items. Obviously we would purchase shoes, jewellery, scarves and home items but it was not mandatory.
Whereas now the situation is entirely different. System changed in 2018 and Hermes has a very crazy policy now. In UAE only. I believe.
To score a Kelly,Birkin or even Constance you have to spend premium, either at one go or within a year.
I was offered two Birkin 30s last year right placed infront of me. One was Etoupe and other colour don’t remember. I could only choose one though. So my SA who I’ve known for years, he told me that I can give you whichever bag you like right away but you have to spend AED 60,000 - 70,000.
I was shocked. And disappointed.
Obviously I refused the offer because I thought it was unfair to put any client in this situation.
It is very difficult to score these bags in Dubai now.
Premium spending is more than the bag price.
I can only suggest you one thing that you should speak to one SA. Have a purchase history at one boutique and then have some talks with your SA. Maybe only then you can find a way.
I don’t want to discourage you because there’s always hope.
And I can totally understand you. It is NOT normal to put any client in such an awkward situation where you have to buy something forcefully even if you don’t like anything or it’s out of your budget.
This practice is NOT only UAE at all. It is common practice in many parts of the world. If you read the rest of this thread, replies from many members in other parts of the world all agree that is the case. It is most common in Asia where they will be open and directly tell you this is how it works. In other places like the US, this is still very much how it works but the SAs don’t say it out loud (most of the time; some SAs can be direct too) but even though they don’t tell you how it works, it is nonetheless implicitly how it works (you will be told there are no bags for you until you start buying other stuff). The more desirable a bag spec is (currently the small sizes in universally loved colors are the hottest) the bigger this pre spend on other stuff is expected to be. If you don’t like this, shopping Hermès directly for quota bags (Birkins, Kellys and to a lesser extent but often Constances) is currently just not for you. There are exceptions to this rule, but sadly this is the rule - around the world - and the few places where it doesn’t work like this are exceptions (notable exceptions include the Paris FSH appointment system for example).
