HELP!! When the receipt doesn't match the price tag...

Hey, you gals - I'm a lawyer and reckon you are both right! If the tag is wrong when you go to the till, you either agree to pay the price they ask or it's a no sale! I hear so many people arguing the toss with SAs about this, thinking it's their legal right to purchase at the price on the tag and, of course, it isn't but any shop that makes this mistake and won't honour the tag, well, you feel you can't trust them and would probably think twice about buying again. I know M&S will take the tag price even if it's wrong; that's the sort of service on which a solid reputation is built!

I have had cause to intervene before to recite the whole "invitation to treat" thing but the blank looks it draws have put me off for the future!:nogood:

I can tell you the same thing happened to me...it matters what is in the system and not what is on the tag when it comes to Hermes. If the manager wants to be kind and offer you the lower price...that can happen, but in my case the manager was the one ringing my sale and I had to pay the higher price. It wasn't a great feeling, but I purchased something that was #1 on my list and I wasn't going to skip the buy over the price difference.

I do understand your feelings on this!

Nah, I had absolutely zero hard feelings over this. This is Hermes, after all!! I love their stuff, and I would absolutely buy from them again and again and again (or until I am unable to afford them). But it does help to know I was not the only one to experience this!

Hermes does this a lot unfortunately. I had the same experience last year with a bag I purchased. I saw the tag (the store I shop at always removes the tags when you buy the item and does not give them to you), and the actual price when I went to pay was higher. I was told the same thing - the tag had the old price before the price increases.

That is not fair at all! A store is supposed to sell to you at the marked price if it is lower, forget about what the computer says! H takes advantage of their rep and figures that peeps are not going to get argumentative because it will not be perceived as polite. Screw that!

Wait, really? Why do they remove the tag? I actually like having the tag after purchasing something - it's kind of part of the package...

gracekelly, I agree with you. My understanding is that in Canada (and I believe, in the US as well) from friends who own retail stores is that they must honour the price as stated on the tag, regardless of what is on the register.

I wasn't sure about policy in other countries so thanks for the heads up about Canada. You would think that it would just be just common courtesy to honor a price tag!

I have no idea why this particular store removes the tag - I find it a bit annoying. The other H stores that I shop at do not remove the tag.

It is expensive enough as it is...do you think they can get the price tag right. It's just disheartening and discouraging to see that you could have paid 10% less on a USD 9000.00 item! :cursing::cursing::cursing:

Wall St charged me a higher tax rate on a Birkin last year because their computers were set wrong. I went back and had them adjust. It's bad enough to pay almost 10% tax in NYC but to pay the wrong tax is even worse. Whether or not you can afford an item, $10 or $10,000 should be rung up accurately.

as with every good business establishment, i believe they should honor the price tag on the merchandise...i would not leave this as a no action on the customer's part...whatever the explanation is...you need to know! For me, i would inquire and perhaps, ask for the price that was on the tag of merchandise...as a matter of principle...iho! Hermes boutique or target...it doesn't matter!

You are right Mistikat. In Ontario, the customer is required to pay the lower price. So if the bag is marked lower, even considerably lower than what is scanned at the register, the store MUST sell it at the lower price. It's the law. I ran into this situation at Chanel with a current season jacket at a deep discount. They priced it at the wholesaler price... what it cost the store to buy it from corporate. Least to say the store manager wasn't happy. Now I know their markup! lol!!!

It's the same here in Australia - the store MUST honour the price tag if it is lower than the scanned price. I actually have had the opposite happen recently and when the item scanned lower than the tag - I pointed it out, the SA shrugged and said it was my lucky day.

It must be confusing to pay tax on top of a price tag, I'd never know how much things were.
