am i being too anal as it is a very small area with the blackening (looks like heavy tarnish on silver)....or shouldnt the piece be pretty much the same as it looked prior to alterations? even soldered 18k yg gold doesnt look this bad....even though it is in a tiny area!

pics in poor lighting so theres shadows (blackening really shows in natural light) and used ms paint, haha, to show where the darkening is happening

and the peretti tag def says pt950 on the other side!

i think b/c of the platinum's steely/chrome look with dark shadows in places, the black doesnt look HORRIBLE or super-apparent right away...but if i were to have it on my golden 18k YG necklace, i think i'd be more upset.... the necklace that's coming to me-- it'd be on the back of my neck and i won't be able to see it all the time but it's different with a bracelet....

let me know what you find out! i'm getting the other two altered (chain shortened) plat. pieces tomorrow in the mail, according to ups, and i'll test-drive them for a week or two-- the same amt of time it took for my current bracelet to become tarnished :/ then i plan on dropping everything off at the store to get it fixed

I wonder if by mistake they DID use silver. They offer DBTY set in silver......
I would not be ok with that black tarnishing. At all.

from what ive been reading online about working with platinum, im thinking that silver might've contaminated this? grrr! ive been anxiously waiting for the arrival of my necklace and bracelet and i will be so bummed if their clasps start doing the same thing!!!

I checked my dbty...I don't see any black tarnishing...I would have them fix that for you

thank you so much for your report on yours! :hugs: i remember you mentioning how you've had yours changed in length and how you've worn it everyday! i guess the person doing my repair was possibly careless and i cant believe wintersong's two repair jobs = came back the same!

heres another pic...a little fuzzy from my iphone's zoom feature....nevermind the dark , arcs of shadows around the curvature of the spring clasp but one can see the black part better in natural light

I have *never* seen platinum turn black like this. It really might be contaminated, OR they just used silver.

:(. Mine was ordered at the store...shortening was actually done in some repairs place that's also in no where the warehouse is.... Dbty necklace will be coming from there too ack...but 2nd bracelet is coming from the ny repair place.....hoping for the best!!!

so far with a week or week and a half of daily wear, my platinum dbty necklace's clasp does not seem black! the 2nd dbty bracelet in plat. ...its clasp doesnt look black but i can't tell or havent gotten a good look with my loupe as i've been busy but ill update when i make a trip to the store to drop off the one bracelet, at least (and possibly the other if there is blackening) !

Hey ladies, sorry for bringing this thread back up. But I had the exact same thing with my platinum dbty. :(

I bought it back in July this yr and it's a .12ct from old bond street in London. I wore it like everyday since I got it and every few days I would take it off n sorta clean it but think it was around a month or so ago I spotted the black bit on the joint bit of the clasp, didn't really has time to sort it out then but few weeks later I got worried so I took it back to Tiffany, it's currently in repair. The lady said she never seen this problem before, so I now got all worried about it and trying to find more about it but this is the only thread I found...

So I wana know if this happened to anyone else? Or maybe just bad luck :(

Oh and would also love to hear from pgtea to see if ur dbty ever gone black again!?

Eep!
This is a very scary thread - after reading it, I took of the Tiffany platinum necklace I had enlarged to an 18" chain - and.... black spots! Both on the large ring, and on two single loops 1" down from the clasp.

It's not an isolated problem. I had this necklace lengthened 2 years ago.

Oh dear. I'm getting rather concerned after reading this thread. Does the blackening occur only for pieces that had been repaired/altered or does it happen to those that had not been repaired/altered too? Is it a common occurance for Tiffany platinum pieces?

I was thinking of getting a Tiffany platinum necklace, but if this happens a lot I may get the yellow gold one instead.
