Hello,

I am a Canadian citizen who has lived abroad in Japan for the last three years. While in Japan, Ive purchased a bunch of 2nd hand luxury designer bags since the pre-owned market here is amazing. Ive heard that sometimes customs guards have given people trouble for their bags and they have to show their receipts just when travelling. Once I was watching one of those boarder security shows and customs guard confiscated a women's brand new Chanel bag because she didn't claim it as a gift because her parents bought it for her in China before going to study abroad in Canada. I would be devistated if this happened to me. Ive purchased all of them myself and could show proof for most, but im not sure if I still have all of the receipts. All of them were purchased pre-owned too, but that could be hard to prove. I do have one YSL bag that I had before coming to Japan, but I don't have the recipe for that. Im not even sure if I have to declare them at all. Im also moving the rest of my stuff home so ill have a ton of other clothes and stuff in 4 suitcases. I could just put it in with everything and treat them as any other item. Just wondering if anyone has been through a similar experience and has advice.

Rather than worrying about it, why don’t you ship them home? Use a service like DHL.

You are returning home to Canada from Japan where you were working? studying? after an absence of 3 years, and are bringing back your used personal goods. End of story IMO. If you have receipts, have them available, but the emphasis should be that these are used personal goods.
Good luck and safe travels!

I dont really feel comfortable sending thousands of dollars of goods in the mail. It can get lost, damaged or taken. Also when you ship something you have to list its value which you might end up having to pay duty and taxes on anyways, even if you already own it.

Wow, this easy! I have been working. Thanks for calming my fears :)

You’ll of course be able to declare any souvenirs/gifts that you’re bringing back. Just make sure that the total is under your allowable amount, and have receipts.

DHL, FedEx, UPS - not the mail, just to give you an option in the future. I live in the US and regularly work with a jeweler in Scotland, and we use DHL with no issues or concerns whatever. Thousands of dollars...

I will repost a summary of my experiences as have moved continents 4 times.
We were given 3 options - container, airfreight and extra baggage allowance on the relocation flight. I have moved my entire collection of H, C bags etc (> 30 bags) and the most valuable are hand carried by me, packed on relocation flight baggage and checked and the rest (majority) via air freight separately as one shipment arriving within 2 days and fully insured. I am happy to answer any other questions you might have. Best of luck!

For the items sent via air freight, did you pack the boxes yourself or did the moving company do it for you? We were told by a friend who works in the relocation business that if they’re packed “separately” (meaning packed by us) the movers know that the items there are valuable and may likely be a target for theft…

We are planning to move to Australia in the next month and I am very anxious. I definitely will not be able to fit my H & C collection on just flight baggage because of the quarantine (need the space, especially with toddler along!)

Appreciate any advice or insight you may have

I packed it once myself but most times it was done by the movers with me watching. It's imposssble to do all of this myself and guarantee 100% trouble-free but so far all they did was break one plate but the risk definitely gave me some stress.

Check your contract with the removal company. Most won’t cover damage/loss for self-packed items. In any case for high-value items, you’ll probably wish to purchase extra insurance anyway.

Thanks for your reply. I will consider having the movers do it and just oversee them. Still a bit stressed but your story gives me hope it can be done. Thanks again :)

Hi did you search for movers yourself or did a relocation company arrange for you? If you searched yourself, what things did you look for to find the moving company? Thx

The relocation company and movers each time was chosen by our employers, who have a lot of experience posting staff worldwide so that was not a problem for us. HR of course played a big part and they have offices on most continents so that helps too. Apologies that I cannot be more detailed.
