Definitely a Burberry trench! Classic and never goes out of style.

I would also recommend a largish scarf, kind of similar to the Nordstrom tissue weight wool/cashmere ones, that can be dressed both up and down.

I am in love with blazers and wear them a ton to work. A good navy wool blazer would go well with a bunch of stuff.

If you drive a lot, a good pair of drivers. The heel part of some of my ballet flats can get a hole worn through them, but a comfortable pair of drivers have a grip by the heel.

Love this list!

First of all - this is your life, not ours. So, make sure that this is the best for you! You might try on that classic Burberry trench, and decide it's awful. Don't buy it just because your online friends in different climates and countries suggest it!

Go online and look for pictures of women who look fabulous while casual. Look at your favorite images, and imagine yourself wearing them. Make a note about what you like and what you don't like. What are they wearing? Jumpers and jeans - but belted with multi chain necklaces? Smart blazers?

Go to the stores and try it on. See how it fits and if it would really irritate you or if you love it. Then, and only then, make up your mind if it's worth it.

I tend to put my money in the stuff which is timeless and which looks really good on me. And which I can wear to death and keep on wearing.

I do think that a well-cut coat can elevate your style. If you are outdoors a lot, you will want a winter weight and rainy-summer weight one.
Cashmere is lightweight and cosy and fabulous.
A good blazer can make an outfit a little warmer and a lot more chic.
A well cut, elegant but plain dress which covers "weddings, anniversaries and teas" which you can change around with accessories and perhaps the above blazer

So many amazing suggestions already!

It's been said, but cashmere for sure. I would buy cardigans so you can layer more easily. Personally, I buy vintage - high quality cashmere only gets better with age! Those by the Neiman Marcus in-house brand are easy to find, thick and soft and beautiful quality, and they are way more affordable than a comparable sweater purchased new. Ballantyne and Pringle and any other vintage Scottish cashmere is virtually guaranteed to be luxurious as well.

Absolutly agreee, this is the best advice you can get :smile1:

I never felt the necessity neither for a trench coat nor for leather jacket, but I have a nice collection of cashmeer jackets and cardis is different colors and in different thickness. For me, love at first sight worked always the best.

Wow, this so depends on personal style. I started this same journey a few years ago but I like edgier clothes and am petite, so for instance a Burberry trench could never work for me.
So first find your proportions - do you prefer fitted on top, bottom, or all flowy, or all fitted? Do long cardigans, jackets, trenches flatter or are you better off with cuts that hit at the waist or are cropped? Take a look at style blogs/photos where the person is of your proportion and coloring.
I would advise for anyone:
Find your best jeans if you are a jeans person - whatever the price, the style that flatters you will have good options. For me it's Rag & Bone. You can never go wrong with well-cut dark jeans.
Get a great leather jacket - personally I am a fan of Rick Owens jackets but this is all about height and build - I would love to wear a classic moto but they look awful on me. If you are tall with strong shoulders a real Schott-type moto could be amazing.
Since it gets cold where you are - choose your favorite coat style and find something you love. My investment coat is a Karl Donoghue black/brown shearling, but for rainier weather you may want a classic cashmere double-breasted coat - whatever you choose just love it!!
I concur on the Weitzman 50/50 knee boot. You can't go wrong especially if you have cold/rainy weather. Also, find the ballet flat that works for you. I went through Chloe and Chanel and Valentino before realizing that Delman and Sam Edelman (yep) worked better and lasted longer for me.
If you need work dressing, find a walkable pump/slingback. I like Emerson Fry for this - in fact EF is great for many classic basics. Manolos are always great too but the price point keeps rising!!
Cashmere - you cannot have enough cashmere jumpers, again up to you if v neck, crew neck, cardigan suit you best. I love a long, cozy, cardigan coat for the climate you describe.
Great wool and silk trousers - this eludes me so far, but if you can find the right cut, buy them. I hear good things about Joseph.
Leather skirt in camel or black, knee length or midi - works in so many places. If you are up for it, leather or suede trousers are an instant upgrade to a simple outfit. If you are unsure, Blank Denim makes great faux leather leggings that will let you test out your comfort factor for under $100 - I wear mine more than my "real" leather and suede. That said, Stouls makes amazing machine washable (!!) sueded leather trousers.
Find a silk blouse you love.
Great scarves can make an outfit. I like Hermès cashmere but not the silks as much; love Drakes mens' scarves, Chan Luu cashmere/silk wrap scarves, and Etro. Invest here as with killer bag, scarf, and shoes you are already dressed.
A few great LBDs and some dresses in your best colors are essential and again, this is up to your taste and structure. For instance, I am too busty AND too short to wear DVF wrap dresses, but they look great on most people. If you can find a sales assistant or personal shopper who is honest and helpful make good use of them here!
In general....find brands that are well-made and fabrics that feel amazing against your skin. This might not have as much to do with name or price as you would expect.
Finally, if you find an item you adore do not hesitate to get it in a few colors or every color :p I have Inhabit cashmeres, Owens leathers, Weitzman 50/50s, Rag Bone boots, and Chan Luu scarves in multiple.
HAVE FUN!!!

I would start with shoes and boots - In my collection the most comfortable have been Sergio rossi and Angelina Voloshina, they've always fit me well they're mostly classic though . For bags I love Chloe - they have best quality and styles. It's fall now so I'll for coats i recommend Max Mara, soft cashmere to keep you warm :). For dresses and jeans I would recommend Michael Kors, I like his selection.
Hope this helps :-)

So many wonderful ideas! I look forward to looking out for the pieces you recommend :)

Fitted (on the waist) tops with either slim fit, bootleg, or wide leg trousers look good on me - and are work appropriate :) I'd like to start wearing more skirts and dresses though.

Thanks again!

I agree that so much of this is personal style, and I don’t know if there are any “essentials.” That said, here are some pieces I find useful to have.

Dresses
For work, I like Theory, A.L.C., and Stella McCartney.

For casual and other day dresses, I like T by Alexander Wang/Alexander Wang, French Connection, and Burberry.

For cocktail dresses and special events, I love Alaia, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and vintage Herve Leger.

Blazers, Jackets, and Coats
A black, navy, gray, and/or striped blazer – I like YSL/SL, Theory, and Stella McCartney. JCrew and Anthropologie also have cute options.

A classic trench – Burberry is my personal fav, but there are other options.

Wool/Cashmere/Alpaca coat – Burberry is my preference here, too, but I also like Fluerette, Alexander McQueen, Gucci, and Vince.

Leather jacket – I love biker and bomber styles. There’s Balenciaga and Rick Owens, but also different options like Muubaa, Helmut Lang, and Mackage.

Jeans
My favorites are AG and Joe’s.

Knitwear
Inhabit, St. John, A.L.C., and Belstaff

Tops
A classic black turtleneck sweater – many options.

Silk shirts – I own at all price points and think there are so many options. Some of my likes would be Vince Camuto, Ann Taylor, Stella McCartney, Gucci, and BCBG.

Shoes
Boots - Stuart Weitzman, Aquatalia, and Burberry

Flats – Lanvin, Burberry, Ferragamo, and E Porselli

Sandals/wedges/pumps – Pedro Garcia, Lanvin

I have several designer bags, but very few designer clothes, and would like to start slowly adding more key pieces to "upgrade" my wardrobe and style.

My style and lifestyle are casual. I wear mostly jeans, a top or jumper, and flats (or sneakers! - I walk a lot). But I'd like to upgrade to "casual chic".

Where I live it is hot (beach weather) in summer but cold and rainy in winter (cold also indoors!)

What key pieces are worth investing in? Classic pieces I can wear a lot that will last a few years: a Burberry coat? Cashmere? What? (I really have no idea!)

I'm 35 and just starting this journey now.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated
This is really very late reply, however I worked in the management of LVMH for three years so I know how the people who work in fashion industry invest their money in their look and which pieces elevate their outfit. The below are the designer items you need to do the job the rest can even be from Mango or Zara:
1. Amazing hair (yes hair elevate the look)
2.Classic Oversized sunglasses
3. Classic Coats (Trenches, one or double button, Check the Devil wears Prada for inspiration )
4.Classic Handbags (Black, tan)
5. Classic shoes styles (never out of style)
Yes all classic and few pieces no need to too many and you will look with the same items classy and chic for very long time plus once you will have the reputation you are an elegant person nobody will check you anymore.

Hope this help!! :heart::heart:

Can I add luxury watch and designer belts (black & brown or tan). They wear the mentioned items every single day with black. Black should be made of excellent fabric not necessary designer so will not fade and look cheap.
