I think 0.80 I VS1. You wouldn't see much different sparkling between triple-ex and double-ex but inclusions do block the reflection. All depend on you though. Congrats for your engagement. Show us some photos when you get it. :)

Thanks Ame, you are a wealth of information. If I did the scores right, the HCA for #1 is 3.2, #2 is 2.9, and #3 is 4.4. I am trying not to get caught up in all the little details. I know that the average consumer may not even know much about clarity, cut, and colour, let alone all the other things to take into consideration. But I am leaning towards #2 due to the better HCA score and faceted girdle, plus it's a little cheaper (only like $100), and it sounds like the faint fluorescence may not be a bad thing.
That would be my pick. I lean towards #2 just based on all there is given but I don't love any of them. So your eyes have to see what they think in person. Do not be afraid to pass on all three and ask for more, either.

Given the information from ame, I would go for the faceted .86 too now. I think the faceted would make the diamond quite "perfect" for you.

I'd definitely go by what you really like in person, rather than what the SA is telling you is their preference... preference is of course always a subjective thing :)

I absolutely agree. You have to see them in person. A true ideal cut with a higher HCA might not appeal to YOUR EYES, and it's YOUR DIAMOND. So do not get too caught up in the numbers, let your eyes guide you. And if you don't fall in love with any of them, then don't buy any of them. There will be more. If you can cover the stone a little with your hand to cover the powerful lights they use, see if the stone looks white edge to edge with that diffused lighting. That also gives away better cut in a pinch, because edge to edge brightness ensures it has proper spread.

A properly graded SI1 will not inhibit light return at all.

Hello,

I have posted other threads about engagement rings in the the past. I have kind of been all over the map, but have finally decided that I want a Tiffany Classic Solitaire. The SA did a search and these are the three rings that are most suitable for our budget. Can you please help me with which is best, if any?

0.80 carat I VS1. Excellent/very good/excellent. Total depth percentage 62.7%, table size percentage 55%, crown height precentage 15.7%, crown angle 34.7 degrees, star length percentage 55%, pavilion depth percentage 43.7%, pavilion angle 41.2 degrees, lower half length percentage 75%, medium to slightly thick girdle thickness, bruted girdle finish, cutlet none.

0.86 carat I SI1. Excellent/very good/excellent. Total depth percentage 62.6%, table size percentage 56%, crown height precentage 15.3%, crown angle 34.8 degrees, star length percentage 55%, pavilion depth percentage 43.7%, pavilion angle 41.1 degrees, lower half length percentage 75%, medium to slightly thick girdle thickness, faceted girdle finish, cutlet none.

0.87 carat I SI1. Excellent/excellent/excellent. Total depth percentage 62%, table size percentage 59%, crown height precentage 14.8%, crown angle 35.4 degrees, star length percentage 50%, pavilion depth percentage 43.6%, pavilion angle 41.1 degrees, lower half length percentage 80%, medium to slightly thick girdle thickness, bruted girdle finish, cutlet none.

They are all within a few hundred of each other in price, so price isn't really a factor, but the first one is the most expensive and the middle one is the least expensive.

I did input them into HCA and the scores aren't that great...how important is the HCA score?

I would pick #1 by looking at the given info BUT you should still see all three side by side. I am sure one will SPARKLE at you :D

I don't live in the states but got our engagement in the states. We had 5 rings within our budget and the SA told me I would pick "this one" that she suggested. I said I will see all 5 then decide on the spot. In turns out in the end that she was RIGHT! My ring just sparkled at me like crazy compare to the other 4!!! I didnt know about the HCA score thing until 3 months later but I plugged in the #s anyway. My diamond scored just below 2...lucky me!

Update - both of the SI1s sold really quickly (no wonder Tiffanys started using SI1s...seems a lot of people like the option of a lower clarity to get a higher carat). Anyway, they ended up finding one that was 0.85 SI1 I and was the cheapest one, so we ended up buying that one! They said it would take a couple weeks to resize because of the holidays, but they did it in a couple days so I could have a surprise proposal! I love my ring, but I have one question:

When you view the diamond from the side, there is a horizontal line that runs all the way across and it is about half way between the girdle and the bottom of the diamond. In some lights it looks clear and other lights it looks darker. What is this? Is it something to do with the way a round brilliant is cut? I can't find the answer online and my finance and I can't seem to figure it out! I would try to take a picture, but I'm sure it would be extremely difficult to capture what I mean. Other than that, the diamond looks pretty much eye clean (I know many of you have been wondering about the SI1s)...maybe a feather or two, but I can't tell if those are just dust flecks or something. We viewed the ring with a microscope and a loupe at Tiffanys and there is an inclusion we could see in the table, but we can't see it with our eyes.

Also - what can I use to clean my ring? I've only had it a few days and I'm noticing it is looking duller. We don't live in a city with a Tiffanys so I can only get it cleaned there every couple of months.

Thanks!

That is the girdle reflection you're seeing from the side :) Normal.

Use dish soap and warm water or windex or rubbing alcohol and a little toothbrush. If you have white gold, don't use the windex tho. Just use that if it's platinum. You can wash that as often as you want. I wash my rings twice a day usually. I personally love a product called Sparkle Sparkle from nventa.com (buy the one for the metal you have) and the little brush that came in that connesiuers jar cleaner (I dump the cleaner out right away and save the jar, brush and tray). Some days I use a capful of Mr. Clean in hot water too.

Ame, is it safe to use rubbing alcohol on diamond/platinum jewelry daily? TIA!

Congrats! That's so exciting! Can't wait to see pics.

As far as cleaning, I probably clean all my diamond jewelry once a week with one of those diamond cleaners you spray out of a bottle (you can find these online), I let this sit and then scrub with an old toothbrush, then I finish it off with a steam cleaner called Jewel Jet. The steam works awesome and it's like you're getting it professionally cleaned! When I'm out of town or traveling for work, I sometimes just use toothpaste. I believe there's also a whole thread in this forum on cleaning your jewelry, just do a search. Congrats again!

Yay! Congrats! We're ring twins! I have a Tiffany I color 0.85 ct as well and I love love love it!!! So exciting!

I use the Tiffany cleaning solution to clean my diamond (with the small toothbrush that comes with it) or sometimes even a mixture of one part ammonia and six parts water (recommended by Tiffany, I believe).
I also recently discovered rubbing alcohol through TPF. Works great!!
I received an ultrasonic cleaner as a Christmas gift, but I didn't yet have the chance to try it.
I also ordered a Diamond Dazzle Stik, which arrived yesterday, but didn't yet had a chance to try that either.
Lastly, when I'm a work, I often drop my ring in a mixture of Mr. Clean with hot water and let it soak for a while.

Phew! I was pretty sure it was a reflection of some sort, but wanted to make sure! And that you for the cleaning tips! Good to know there are easy ways to clean it. I will try using the dish soap and water or a bit of glass cleaner (doesn't have to be windex, does it?). A friend told me Mr. Clean, so good to know that is also acceptable. The ring is platinum, not gold.

Yay! The pictures of your ring actually were what made me realize that 0.85 would still be a good size for me (and not too small) because we have similar size fingers. I believe you said you are 4.5 and I am 4.25! The diamond still looks really white to me, even with being an I! We compared it at Tiffanys to rings that were in the 0.90ish range or a little higher with G-H colours and VS1-VS2 clarities and these rings were all about $5000 more than mine (quite a lot of money when you are in my price range...we're talking not quite 2x more, but about 1.7x more!) and we really couldn't tell a difference between our ring and those rings! Maybe a slight difference between the G and I, but definitely not between the H and I.

I didn't know Tiffanys has their own solution. I may have to get that next time I'm there, just for convenience. Let me know how you like the Dazzle Stix!

So a toothbrush is ok? I keep worrying that will be too abrasive, but I get diamonds are pretty sturdy! I was going to use a soft cloth, like a microfiber cloth or a glasses cleaning cloth.

Yea get a baby toothbrush and gently brush the stones. I don't use it on the metal other than prongs, I don't have other stones in my ering. I also use it on my wedding band VERY gently. I dry with a lintfree paper towel usually. I don't like microfiber cloths bec sometimes if there's a little random roughness on the metal you can snag.

Mr Clean, I use Windex (or like target generic windex) sometimes, dawn or palmolive dishwash soap (like not dishwashing detergent you use in the dishwasher, this is just the stuff you use in the sink!)

Also--rinse with warm-hot water, and dry VERY well, esp under the stone if you can. Ill twist the corner of a dry paper towel to get a little pointy bit and dab it underneath the diamond.
