An all yellow ring would be more versatile, imho.
yellow Sapphires or citrines or imperial topaz would work.
Once you do two colors, it is more tricky to wear and easier to be bored with.
Your next step is to meet with a designer, she could have more ideas to offer as well.

Yes you have a great point about not mixing too many colours. An all-yellow or yellow/white ring might work...

Currently lockdown is on, so this project will have to wait until restrictions on movement are lifted. But I can’t wait to get stuck into it!

I don’t think you should use white diamonds. Your Q-R color is no where near the yellow shade of any of these photos are. If you use white diamonds, it will make your center stone look low quality and it will look like you are trying to take low quality halo engagement ring and make it look bold. Is it possible to post a photo of your stone on a piece of white paper to see the shade? It’s hard to visualize your yellow shade. If it’s lemony yellow, that would be different.

I would add some sapphires to make it a “color” cocktail ring. The eye will be drawn to ring, not the center stone. I like blue sapphire. It’s a classic. Plus, do you really want an engagement ring look alike on your right hand? To me, it says “that was my first engagement ring”. I would definitely your ring a big cocktail ring.

I love bling bold rings too. With sapphires, you can have a lot of fun. And they are very hard for everyday use (Mohs scale of 9).

Good luck!

unfortunately, the stone is currently in the bank which is where I left it before lockdown began, and now I have no ability to get to it. I will probably leave it there until I can take it to a jeweller and begin work on it.

I will have to probably bring the stone out and take a look at it again before taking any decisions, since I’m mostly relying on memory. I do remember it being a nice even yellow colour, but a little chameleon-esque (a bit more yellow in some lights vs others).

I’m hesitant to add colour as I do plan to wear it everyday. I keep going back and forth about that in my head...

thank you for your help!

@Onebagtoomany @limom @willeyi and all the others who took the time to comment (thank you) - what do you guys think of this picture that I just found online? I think it’s absolutely stunning and I’m leaning towards something like this!!

I would say that the diamond I received is a bit yellower than this (this has a more brown tint imo). I might experiment with making that first halo a bit more of an obvious colour contrast instead of using melee that is a very close match to my diamond’s colour. I think the style is lovely and very classic!! Do you guys think that it works?

It is lovely especially with the yellow gold and white gold setting. It will give the illusion that the stone is larger as well.
It will be an expensive ring to create imo unless you do it in Asia..

My parents live in Asia! So I do plan to do this there, once travel restrictions are lifted and I can go to them. I usually get all my jewellery made in Asia through a family jeweller (unless it’s the rare designer piece I splurge on).

I like this, as it makes the stone look larger and gives an ombre effect.

I was going to say that I'd lean towards pairing it with a blue or purple art deco halo, but you mentioned you're hesitant to add color to the setting.

I went back and forth with colour right from the start - the idea is captivating (especially something with pink or red accents) but at the same time I feel like I need it to be as neutral as possible to go with everything I wear, so adding in purple or blue or pink might look super cool but then I might find it difficult to match, and I really would like to be able to wear this everyday. I tend to mix metals in my jewellery, so having some yellow doesn’t bother me since yellow diamonds/yellow gold are visually consistent. I’m afraid I might get bored of the colour (as someone mentioned earlier).

First, if you love it, you are all that matters. I like big bold colored gemstone rings which I am sure many hate. But jewelry is for me, as jewelry is for you. You are the one who has to wear it and be happy with it.

That said, for me, I am not a fan of that ring. It looks like a mall ring. It looks like one is trying hard to make a big bold statement with a bunch of “small stuff” and it only highlights how tainted the center diamond is.

Of course, this also depends on the color of your diamond when you actually see it live.

A blue sapphire is classic and goes with everything so my vote goes for sapphire accents. Also, it will be a setting that does not make it look like an engagement ring. This is after all, a right hand ring, not an engagement ring. But again, it’s your call.

One other thought since the tint of your diamond may be the issue... what about just wearing it as a solitaire pendant. Are you into pendants? It won’t have to compete with anything and it can stand all on its own. You can do a bezel and make it like a Diamonds By The Yard. If it were me, I’d rather have a 1ct faint yellow DBTY pendant than a ring with a tainted yellow diamond and a bunch of stuff to try and “work” with that yellow taint. That’s just me and again, it’s what you like. I am just throwing out my opinion so you can see a different view and then go with your gut. And by the way, Tiffany does make yellow DBTY pendants, so yup... you can say you designed it that way, to highlight your yellow stone.

My gut is that once you get your engagement ring on your right hand with a nice white diamond, you will not like that Q-R color diamond anymore and may not even wear that ring you just spent money on a custom design.

And thinking now... I would suggest you wait until you get your engagement ring first, then design the ring later.

But if that diamond were mine, I think a 1ct DBTY pendant would be my choice. I wouldn’t put it in a ring.

Good luck!

Thank you for your comment - I’m actually glad to get a dissenting opinion into the mix because it helps me really figure out what I want!

I would still like to keep it as a ring - that was the request, and I have some beautiful pendants already. Besides, I don’t really like the DBTY style. I’m not a fan of bezels.

I’ll wait until I see the diamond again in person before I take any real calls, and I’ll be holding it against yellow/white diamond to see what it looks like for sure before pulling the plug. Though, to be honest, I really like the buttery yellow colour in its own right :D I love white diamonds, of course, but I also really like the champagne yellow colour. It is however a sound idea of yours, for me to wait until I have my engagement ring so I can get something that I’d be happy to wear on the other hand!

Also to your point about gemstones - I love gemstones (though in my culture we don’t wear blue sapphire, so I would’ve gone with pink sapphire or something if I did colour) but I just don’t see myself wearing a coloured halo. Then I’d rather do something like a moi et toi, but I know I wouldn’t reach for that everyday either - I have a yellow and pink sapphire ring that I rarely wear. I feel like for an everyday ring it really has to be something neutral.

I think your idea of waiting until after I’m engaged is a sound one, I’ll take this design that I currently really like to the jeweller and ask him for his input as well, and then come up with something that complements the stone, my e-ring and my personal style instead of fighting against it.

Thanks for all your help!
