help me decide. Birkin or Jewelry?

I guess it depends alot on how much jewellery you already have aswell. I now have just about all the jewellery I want (for now:graucho:)
I think now matter what advice there is about investments there is, you have just got to have what you want. I never buy anything for its future value, otherwise I would probably have a wardrobe full of stuff that MAY be worth something in the future, but I dont wear it, or even like it.
You have to love something (anything) to spend that much money on it.If you dont, dont bother, unless you are megarich!!!
If it doesnt make you scream with delight or yearning, you will never love it, despite the price tag.
Spend your money on something you love or save it!!!

Try posting the same thread/question at "The Jewelry Box" subforum ;). See the answers/suggestions and compare with Hermes subforums' You'll find a golden middle. Although I'm pretty sure about your choice...but you never know. Just follow your heart and indulge. Spoil yourself, woman ! No one can do it better then yourself :okay:

You are totally right. We need to spoil ourselves once in a while. That is what is great about this forum. The "shallow obsessing strongly encouraged" is my favorite part. Not because of its literal meaning. I hate it when people think I may be materialistic. I like nice things- nothing wrong with that. Our husbands buy expensive cars, high real estate, nice fishing trips, quality skis etc. that is their materialism even though it is not labeled that. These guys aren't fishing with a rod from Wal-Mart or driving an old rusty car. Just like we are not going on with our daily activities with a handbag from Coach. We deserve indulgence!

Another vote for the bag.

My husband understands jewelry but a Birkin? He'd probably fire me out of a circus cannon if he knew exactly how much it cost. I had to 'disappear' several of my other bags just to give the appearance of balance in the Force. Only then did I introduce him to the H bag. sigh.

Yes, the bag if you really want one.

:woohoo:Wow.....this is great advice and really how Hermes works....you're not buying a Birkin, you're buying their $7,000 coats, their $900 shoes, their $1500 pants and stuff for seasons at a time.....then you're offered "the bag". It really does take a while before you can see one of these things, so if you go this route, the reseller is probably faster, unless you're really lucky. But this is great, great advice......

Not always true. I was offered one and I had only ever purchased a scarf. I have been offered one every time I have been. And believe me I am no Hermes High Roller!!! I do love the brand, and the SAs and managers know that about me. I have been given excellent service, and invitations, and offered splendid bags even though my purchases have been very minor by comparison to others in this forum.

I do not live near a store... I have to fly to get to one. I do a lot by phone---scarves, small leather goods and such. Not because I have to, but because I love them.

When I make my visit, I usually have one or two things purchased and waiting for pick up, and a few things to look at, selected by my SA. They know I make a special effort to go to the boutique, and they treat me very kindly and we always have a pleasant visit....Then I fly home with my goodies. I have turned town three birkins and a HAC and a croc kelly....so I have not been blacklisted, either....I just got another call today.

So, it is possible to be offered a Birkin...and I would love to see the OP enjoy the hunt a bit, going to H and discussing leathers and sizes can be a sublimely pleasurable experience, particularly when you hone in on your dream bag and it is offered to you, whether it is a birkin or a kelly or a garden party!!

Suzana, how far do you have to go to get to Hermes? Perhaps you could test the waters by phone and do something like I have done?

As to the topic of jewelry or a birkin...if your dream bag is really the birkin, and it is not something you DH would gift to you, then it is a great gift to yourself, if it will make you happy. I live a casual life and dont do a lot of jewelry, so that is my .02 on that!

I live in Tennessee. We have no Saks, no Neimans, not anything. Macys is the biggest thing here. Unforutanetly we are stuck here. My family runs a tristate movie buisness and a commercial real estate business. We are literally stuck to the town. So the funny thing about my town is that everyone dresses to the nines. I was at walgreens the other day. This lady was going to the lake for labor day weekend- she was picking up meds for her husband. she had a 10 pt motif Van cleef and arpels necklace, an amazing birkin that I am still trying to figure out what it was, an oscar de la renta dress, and amazing shoes. JUST TO PICK UP MEDS! This is the town I live in. It is like this 24/7. Everyone wears the best of the best no matter where you are. I personally love wearing some yoga clothes with a great bag when doing errands. I just can't put myself to wear everyting fabulous with 2 kids.

Thank you cobaltblu for your input. I should just be gutsy and see what can happen over the phone. I have been pregnant for the past couple of years- a 2 year old and 6 month old as of today. So that is the reason I have not been traveling at the moment.

You are so lucky! I guess an amazing SA is what makes all the difference. What part of the country is your H store located in?

^the part surrounded entirely by water, LOL!

I think that the same is true of other stores as well, but as you said, the SA makes all the difference.

Personally, I'd keep the stock and talk your hubby into buying you a Birkin in Paris. You'll save money! It will be an heirloom! And over time, your stock will appreciate (hopefully), so you can ALSO get the jewelry and a nice accessory!
