I have a rather good decision to make. My DH and I are upgrading my original ER for our recent 10th anniversary. I've worn the original ER for 14 years and love it (it's a very sparkly Tiffany & Co 1.23 vvs1 G).

At the store I assumed I would prefer the Novo or Lucida. But was drawn back to the very sparkly round and something else that caught my eye: the Princess Cut (they didn't make them back then).

So I now have 2 rings and must return 1. Option 1 is a round brilliant 2.76 G VVS1. Option two is a princess cut modified brilliant 2.89 G VVS1 (similar stats).

I love both rings. They sparkle differently (the round has more colorful sparkles, the square is constantly white). Both are beautiful in their own ways. I've taken lots of pics to help me choose but I'm still stuck (ex. is square too angular or trendy? Can I wear it in 30 years).

I wanted a more striking ring, and as large solitaires they both seem to be.

What are your opinions. I am deciding today. Thanks!

I'm surprised I'm saying this because I always prefer round over princess but in this case I think I prefer the princess. That one is really, really beautiful. Congrats on your upgrade, and no matter which you pick it'll be a winner!

   Love them BOTH!!!

But, if it were up to me, I'd go with the princess cut. Once upon a time I thought they were too 'trendy' but I really think they are going to be (if they haven't already become) a classic. Yes, the round is lovely as well, and of course, nothing sparkles like a round. However, I don't know why, but I have just never been a fan of rounds in a ring...or at least as a solitaire. To me, they seem sort of 'ordinary'? Probably because more rounds are sold than any other shape? Anyway, I've always been more drawn to the fancy shapes.

BTW, you have beautiful hands!!

Tough Tough Tough!
For you, I feel you look amazing with the princess. I do like the round as well and I can't believe I am going to say this, but I feel the round almost looks too big in size for you. It is almost like it sticks out too much and you really look better with the smaller round stone.
My vote goes to the princess!

Thanks again for all of your opinions/responses. I REALLY do appreciate it.

What Ahertz said is really my problem: I tend to prefer rounded shapes (for the fire and scintillation). So I was surprised at how drawn I was to the princess.

We thought taking them out of the store would help eliminate 1, but it didn't as they both looked better out of the store.

At their worst, in certain dark lighting situations, the round can be very dull/flat yet sending out small flashes of colored light) while the square stays white (almost like a silver metal).

This should be such an easy decison! I'm really not usually like this.

They are both lovely. I think the round may end up hitting more of what you want years down the line in terms of a classic. Plus, something to think about is that the corners of a Princess cut can be fragile And they will catch on things.

I feel your pain! lol

If it helps, I do own a princess cut and mine never catches on anything. (It is a classic three stone princess setting) I do want to say mine is with only one prong on each corner and not framed as your is. Your setting will definitely protect your corners, which is a plus. I have had mine for over 10 years and never had an issue. I can also tell you that even when it is dirty it looks amazing. It is something about the sparkle of a princess that is beautiful. I can see why you are struggling with this one.

I love the round as well and own a few rounds, too. My concern for your round would be how high it is set. Make sure that you are ok with that because it is a larger stone. I would not want you to bang it too much. With my princess I don't have that issue.

Keep us posted.
