Have you stop buying a brand/designer bags because it has little/no resell value?

i bought total of 4 lv bags & 2 wallets. all ended up with my sis & sis in lw. i used it couple of times only. i'm not a collector, no intention to sell them and i don't buy 2nd hand item. i buy only classic design and can't understd those who rented bags frm shop. if u can't afford it, don't pretend to own it.:graucho: bags quality depreciate very fast. better share my joy with the people i luv than letting it sit in the closet for yrs and yrs. that's what happened to my lv saumur! untouched for last 14yrs! now 1 gucci bag in closet, waiting to gv away, mayb.. Purchased, 2d ago, a balenciaga ' classic day' bag!

I have sold numerous bags in the last 12 months and learned the hard way that many have very little re-sell value. I didn't buy them in the first place to resell them but it's taught me a couple of things.

Firstly, the popular bags have the most re-sell value ie. the Chanel Flap, the BV hobo, Hermes Kelly/Birkin. If you buy obscure Chanel/BV/Hermes, you'll get very little back for them.
Secondly, taste is so subjective. I had several MJ bags which I didn't use and assumed they would sell very quickly and I thought they were gorgeous. Obviously other people didn't agree! They took ages to sell.

So, yes, now I do keep that in mind but it's not the only way I buy bags. However, if I am considering a new brand that I haven't seen (I live A LONG way from designer shops and buy most online), I will buy the "it" bag for that line in case I don't like it or use it and that way maximise my return on re-sale.

I don't mean "investment" as in "retirement" because that would be totally not advisable.

Unfortunately, I have twin boys... so no one leave them to.

I know you don't mean investment as retirement, and I have two boys myself too, no one to leave bags to. I was giving examples trying to explain my opinion.
Now that I re-read my post I realize it sounds a bit rude. Sorry, that wasn't my intention.

I dont "collect" bags. I USE bags for their intended purpose.
I never even thought about the re-sale value of bags until I joined tPF.
I went through a phase where I had to have all kinds of bags, in all kinds of colors...After not having any room left in my closet, I discovered quality definitely beat out quantity. I narrowed my possessions down to two brands, with several of their classic bags...and I am totally satisifed.
It IS nice though that the re-sell of alot of my bags DID help to fund my higher end ones!

I do think hard to buy a bag that have no resale value, i'm not a super rich that can purchase a bag whenever i like one, and i love bags, and i get bored, so i have to be smart to get them.
I only buy retail value on the brands that i know i wouldn't lose much money when i'm bored and selling it in the future, when i like a brand i know that doesn't have a resale value i will not buy it in full retail price, i will try to find the bag on sale or in good used condition. For instance i would buy a 2,000$ chanel bag but i won't buy a 2,000$ marni bag although i like them the same. I will only buy the marni if i can find it on sale or in good used condition for price way less than that.

Nope -- the resale value of most handbags has dropped tremenedously over the last few years. I buy my bags to use and enjoy. If I decide to sell a bag sometime down the road to help pay for a new one, I take what I can get for it. I didn't buy the bag to sell, I bought it to use, so anything I make on it's sale is considered a "profit" IMO. I'd rather take a couple hundred bucks for a bag, then let it sit in my closet unused where I'm not making any money on it. Something is always better than nothing

The resale value of bags (especially luxury designer) has become a factor I consider when I buy bags but, no, I have no stop buying designer bags because of this very reason. I keep most of my bags and still enjoy using those I bought years back. So far, only sold two of my designer bags. The price which I let them go stung me for a while. So now, I am trying to be patient to wait out for a sale or pre-loves.

No, I buy bags to use and care most about whether they suit what I need to carry and how I like to organize it - brand isn't that important to me, but most of my current ones are Coach/KS/LAMB and I find they wear better than the cheap ones I used to buy.

I can pay $200-$300 for one of these brands and it will last longer than 5 or 6 of the $50 bags I used to buy, so in that sense I consider it an 'investment'.

If I bought a bag thinking of re-selling it I'd be afraid to use it in case I damaged it!

I totally agree!

I try really hard not to buy anything with no resale value, as I generally use bags a few times and am ready to move on already. If I buy them for great deals I usually profit, or at least break even when I sell them. I was looking at my collection pic from just a few months ago and I don't have a single bag from that pic anymore! Talk about fickle, and maybe purse ADD? :p

I hear ya! This is how I am starting to get because I noticed that with sone bags there's little to no resale value! I recently had a Dooney bag that simply would not sell (I only made the starting bid $9.99!). With alot of my Coach and CC Skye bags, I make $100 tops...and that is for a practically BRAND NEW, in some cases brand new w/ tags bag!!! Lately i've been buying alot of premier designer bags from eBay and there were quite a few of them where I made alot more than what I paid for them when I resold them! I also sometimes buy bags in lots...keep the ones I like...and resell the others singlely. But yeah...I used to think I would always KEEP all my bags, but as your tastes and style change, it just doesn't pay off sometimes.

i never thought about it until recently, that there are just some designers that don't resell as well. although i've always broke even or lost just about 15% of what i paid, i don't really mind. however, it is a bit of a factor playing into the things i buy recently, just cause i change my mind more than i like

I never buy bags to resell, but sometimes find myself doing that. I just don't like waste/bags sitting in dustbags. But I don't like the risk and inconvenience of selling on, say, eBay. So for now I am more or less satisfied with what I've got. And instead of buying premier brands on impulse, these sorts of purchases will now have to be Kipling or something. That way, if I tire of them I can give them to friends.

I know what you mean. I don't buy bags for "investment" purposes. I also get tired of bags very quickly (by very quickly, I mean a few months) and end up losing some money on them in the long run when I sell them, because I just want something else. My collection has significantly reduced in the past year to about 15 bags as my taste has changed and I wanted to consolidate (sell 5 or 6 mid-range to get one pricey luxury bag) and get some brands that I didn't own and either sell or donate the others because my closet was just too full and I wasn't using them for a long time. I'm at the point that i'm looking for functionality and quality. So to answer your question, yes. I've drastically cut down my designer bag habit with the exception of a mini Coach binge I was on not too long ago.
