I LOVE ALL BAGS... in any given day I could walk into a store that sells handbags and would walk out with at least one bag, name brand/designer or not.

However, I stop doing that a few years back I was trying to "clean out my closet" I couldn't get any money selling my like new/new handbags. After a while, I was tired of donating nearly new bags to Goodwill and Hope.

So I came to the conclusion that if I were to spend money on a handbag, it is going to be a long term "investment." (of course, DH thinks it is "crazy" to view handbags as investments.)

How about you?

Well, I've never bought a bag with the idea that I would sell it and get my money back. I buy bags because I love them and intend to keep them. By the time I fall out of love, what amount of $ I can get for them is beside the point. You KNOW how fickle we can be, here on tPF!

No, I've never done it. It always would be that if I liked a bag enough, I would buy it without the resell factor in my judgment. I would buy bags that I intended to keep for as long as they lasted without looking completely beat-up. I wasn't always successful and have sold just one brand new purse without profit and given away a few others after losing some money to fees for those that haven't sold. I still have like 10 that I don't intend to keep but cannot seem to sell at what I thought were extremely reasonable prices. I'd rather give them away to people I at least like a little than to complete strangers for at low-ball prices. Reselling bags is time consuming, very risky, and often wasteful since auction sites like eBay primarily have bargain buyers. Also, an investment should be something that you get more out of than you put in over time.

I never buy bags with intention of reselling them. I never sell any of my bags. I wear them until they fall apart and then I throw them away.

I try really hard not to buy anything with no resale value, as I generally use bags a few times and am ready to move on already. If I buy them for great deals I usually profit, or at least break even when I sell them. I was looking at my collection pic from just a few months ago and I don't have a single bag from that pic anymore! Talk about fickle, and maybe purse ADD? :p

I never really thought about it before until a few years back... I mean, since, we ARE so quick as falling in and out of love with bags, that we should keep that money "circulating" so we can continue to "collect."

Believe me, I usually intend to "keep" when I buy the bags but it is nice to know, if I were to sell, that I will get some $$ to put towards my next purchase.

I don't buy bags because I intended to resell them. I collect not resale. But I have so many that there is no way any of them were to "fall apart." Even if they do, most of the premium designer workshops will refurbish the bags to almost original glory. So that makes "keeping all the bag I ever purchased" an impossible task. Not to mention, DH will go crazy because he will have no room in our closet for his socks!

I've never heard of reselling your bags or thinking bags as investments until I joined tPF. A lot of bags have passed through my hands. I used them until the love is gone and either gave them to family and friends or goodwill when I am bored with them.

This site has opened my eyes to different world of handbags. For a very brief time I thought that it would be fun to collect bags but then I learned that there is a difference between loving the bag and wearing it vs collecting them as closet bags. I'm down to about 6 bags now after an intense downsizing phase and I think that I'm almost done. I think there is still a couple of bags calling my name but I can wait. They are classic styles and will always be "IN" for me.

I never buy bags as investments. I buy them because I like them and that's it, and I've never sold a bag and maybe I'll never will, so resell value is not very important to me. It's nice to know that a certain bag I have has a good resell value but if a bag doesn't have such value that won't detract me from buying it.

Actually, I think one should not consider bags as monetary investments. Some bag hold their values well? Yes, but it is not real state or jewelry KWIM?
In any case, the type of investment one should worry about is the style investment, not the monetary one. Because if you can wear a bag for many years without it becoming unfashionable, that is good. And if you can pass it to your daughter many years later that is even better, that was a good "investment".

I think about reselling value only when I risk online and am not sure if I would like it when it comes. I would never experiment with Hayden harnett because the value is so low for reselling. Alexa, Mulberry, on the other hand, I wanted so badly and I did not like at all when I got it, it looked so cheap, but it sold so well

I never buy thinking about reselling. I think it would be a bad idea to justify current purchases based on some future hypothetical sale price. All it would take would be one accident with a drink to lose resale value. I know some people do rotate their collection quickly so resale might be important to fund new purchases.

I think bags would actually be a horrible investment in terms of $$ but maybe not in terms of enjoyment.

I don't mean "investment" as in "retirement" because that would be totally not advisable.

Unfortunately, I have twin boys... so no one leave them to.

I certain think that if you can resell your "old bags" for funds for your "new bags" I can certainly count that as "investment" for "future purchases."

Am I making sense at all?

While I don't buy bags as investements, I've been thinking more and more about resale value. It's really depressing to possess a "collection" of bags (purchased for at least 10K-20K) that are now worth approx. 3K-5K (on auction sites). While I loved many of those bags initially, several were replaced by others that I now prefer to carry.

So, to answer your question, yes, I now consider resale value when purchasing and refrain from buying certain bags (unless I adore them and they are absolute KEEPERS!).

Good question.
