Have you bought a bag that breaks your personal bag design "rules"?

In a way yes.
There were styles of bag that I wanted to try. Like a document holder or a carry only clutch without a strap.
They were designs that I was interested in but not sure if it would work out for my lifestyle. I would buy them and try to use them, but at the end of the day, if they didn't work out, I would sell them.
This is probably not advisable for most people since most bags depreciate in value and one needs to accept the losses when re-selling items. But it was something I was fully aware of at the time (when I was trying and experimenting with different bags).

I have a Purse Problem. Period.

As much as I have been buying bags for years AND now older and allegedly wiser AND previously bought many many bags that didn’t quite stick AND really should know better since I know what works for me/my style... I still can’t help myself!

I troll resellers sites late at night, get that high like seeing an old crush and bam! I rock my own boat and buy a bag that’s more random and a risk.

I covet vintage styles that got away so I try my luck this time around - especially when the sale prices are hard to beat. But same as back when I was in my early 20s, I just move the “ok, not so great after all” buys and start again. I have bought a few this past 12 months that I know ain’t right but I also don’t care! The joy that some of these bags give me is worth keeping just so I can play with it.

Yes. I like the tactile nature of old school bags where the drapey, gorgeous leather is the appeal. Think givenchy’s nightingale. But like with others, the big black hole isn’t functional for me. A structured crossbody is more useful and I wear those way more often. But I still buy an occasional leathery bag because I think they present an edgy vibe that the structured bags don’t.

I break my rule when I see someone carrying a bag I'm pretty sure won't work for me, but it looks so good on them I just have to get it! I'm also a sucker for pretty hardware. I have purchased bags just because of the hardware on the opening or straps. I usually buy these bags hoping they'll work for me, but at the same time clearing a spot for them in my closet because that's where they'll be most of the time.

I do this! Was shocked at Balenciaga city low prices a few months back on secondhand sites....and missed out cause it is "back".

Same! I learned the hard way after bringing a hobo (similar to the Marc Jacobs hobo) on a trip. So heavy, and somehow more of a black hole that a large LePliage tote.

I think this is why I'm so stuck! I'm pretty convinced by this whole thread that I shouldn't buy the bag now, but there's still 20% of me thinking...it's pretty, just get it and when you're not using it you can just look at it.

Many times have I broken my rules!

I hate clunky hardware and metal straps. Yet I have 4 bags with chain straps and I love them.
I don't love brown or mustard yellow (basically hate both colors), but I have a bag in each color and I love both of them.
I don't like flap bags as I find them fussy, but I have a few and actually enjoy using them.

Rules are meant to be broken, when they are ones I've set for myself.

Yes. It’s been about 2 years since I’ve done it but…black handbags. I realized a LONG time ago that I find black handbags boring. I have a couple of clutches for nights out and one regular bag. It’s funny because I’ve always wanted a Chanel Reissue. However, it will need to be in a color other than black.

Absolutely, but over time, I've learned not to beat myself up over it and instead factor it into the decision. I've gotten better at assessing how much I love the bag, how likely I'll find something else in this category I love, whether I'll be alright with carrying it infrequently, and if I'll be alright swallowing the cost.

Sometimes it's worth it to break my rules and other times it's not, but when I consider the whole of it together, I'd rather have the collection and knowledge I have now than not having taken those risks.

The heart says yes, but the mind says no.

Have you ever loved the look of a bag so much that you bought it knowing that it is probably too small for you, or too impractical?

Once the novelty wore off, did you end up finding it annoying?
Do you still use it?

I'm trying to talk myself into/out of buy a bag that is smaller than I'm used to and closes with only a magnet (and not even the kind that clicks into place): the Jacquemus Grand Bambino
I say a few are ok, especially if it’s a brand or collection you love but make sure it won’t bust the bank :)

I'm a very impulsive (shopper!) person, so I've actually been surprised by how careful I've been with buying handbags. I think it comes down to how I feel, and that normally falls into two categories.

1. if I immediately want a bag so much that I hit buy, then it's probably the right choice. Even if I don't get it, I'm going to obsess over it until I get it. In those cases, I won't know if I like it until I actually have it in my hands and try it out.

2. If I want the bag but I want to think on it more, then I eventually lose interests in a few weeks. I'm also aware the flip side of impulsivity is losing interest quickly, which does play to my advantage. I'm sure if I still had the same crazy obsesion about handbags as I started with, my wallet would be in serious danger. Eventually though, you look at enough handbags that the novelty wears off.

So did you get the Jacquemus? I’m also looking at the same bag but I’m not 100% convinced that I even like it!!
No...I talked myself out of it, but I do find myself still looking and watching review videos and checking stock
The general consensus amongst those videos is that it fits less than it looks like it would. Which is..not great. Most of us want a mary poppins bag right?
I know my essentials would fit. It would be completely fine. I use a mini phone, cardholder, don't carry lipstick or perfume. But I like knowing I could take a compact external battery, or sunglasses, or mints, etc. It doesn't lend itself well to any spontaneous extras.
Every review video involves putting items in just so, tetris style or the flap won't close. I just don't understand why they made it wedge shaped. Or at the very least, instead of a smooth sided magnet that can just pop open, have the kind of magnet that snaps into place.
I have briefly considered ordering it just to see it in real life, but I'm also trying to see if there's something else out there.

I'm trying to see if this is me! I do feel like I was obsessing a little. It has lessened since I stopped looking every single day, but hasn't fully gone away yet. I think it takes months to year for my interest to die down unfortunately. And really...that's the lifespan of a bag for some people right? Weeks may mean the interest was based on novelty. Months to years means it would have been something that would be well used.
