Has anyone had the stone get loose in their ring?

The diamond on my wedding ring became loose and you could actually hear the diamond moving around in the setting. I took mine back immediately to the jewelers and they tightened the prongs for me at no charge. Definately take it back for them to fix, and they shouldn't charge you anything to do so. Especially since you've been through so much hassle already. Let us know how it works out.

This definitely should not happen with a brand new ring of 2 weeks, especially with platinum! It sounds like the mounting was not made properly. I would take it back and have it looked at. Platinum settings are supposed to secure your stones the best, and should not require "check ups" for at least a few years of consistent wear (not the same for gold settings, which require more frequent check ups).

This is my biggest fear! I have a 4 prong setting, but it's very low, so I don't usually bump it. But I'm always shaking it next to my ear to make sure it's not jingling around!

Well, I went to another good jeweller first, to get their opinion. They said they could tell the stone had not been mounted properly, and showed me that there wasn't any evidence of the prongs being bent or bumped.

I had been nervous about the four-prong setting, and now I'm even more uncomfortable with it. We talked to someone at Birk's, and she said they will have to send the ring away for a few weeks to re-set the stone. I had just waited three weeks for the ring to be sized, and then I had it for exactly nine days, (I thought it was almost two weeks, but not quite) and the stone was loose! I didn't want to wait for another three weeks and then be worried about the stone becoming loose again.

I know this is not a common things with Birk's, and they were really good about it, but we decided to return the ring and get something with a more solid setting. I sadly left the ring at the store last night.

We'll find another ring...

My original engagement ring was set in a four prong white gold setting. I knocked it loose with regularity. (It was an oval with taper baguettes). I actually chipped it once and had to have it replaced!

After 3 years of regular repairs and tightening I had it reset in a larger 4 prong platinum setting. My jeweler asked me a lot of questions about my lifestyle, job, etc and determined that the thin setting I originally had was not sufficient for my rough and tumble life. (I took the baguettes off and replaced them with pears at the same time!! He recommended a more substantial setting right?)

I have it checked annually and have not had to have it tightened at all. That said I do not think any stone should come loose after 2 weeks. I wonder if it was a flaw in design or just a "bad lot". The right ring will find you, I am certain and it will be better then the other  !

^^^Wow--three years of regular repairs and tightening? You are a lot more patient than I am!!!

I decided that for all the $$$ we were spending, I didn't want to be scared of losing my stone, and having to send it away for repairs all the time.

I'm thinking perhaps a ten-prong ring would be secure! Okay, maybe five or six. I'm really anxious to find something else-- I loved wearing that sparkly thing! It was my first diamond!

I'm glad they were good about it, but that's so sad that you left the ring there until you get a new one. I feel so naked without my e-ring!!

I have a 4 prong w/ a princess cut in white gold and it's never had to be tightened, I've had it for 9 yrs now.
I get it checked about once/ year and it's always perfect.
You have to be happy, if it would always worry you, you did hte right thing.
Sorry you don't have it anymore :(

Thank you so much for this thread ladies! Such a life/diamond saver!

I have this diamond ring that I wear all the time and I was convinced one of the stones was loose as when I rubbed it you could feel it sort of grate, it wasn't wobbly but it definitely moved. It's such a fine setting aswell with it being such an old ring that I didn't want to risk it slipping out. I took it to this big jewellers near me to ask their advice and they basically made me look like I was making it up!

Anyway a couple of weeks later I saw this thread on tPF and someone suggested shaking it to see if it rattled which I'd not thought of. So I did and you could hear the stone moving around!!! That convinced me to go try another jewellers, so I took it to the place across the street (which happens to be owned by the same guy as the first) and straight away they spotted which stone was loose. I was sooo happy!!! (although it would have been better if it wasn't loose in the first place :p ) So my ring has been sent away and hopefully they'll ring me this week as to what work needs doing.

I had to take mine in a few months ago because I felt it was too loose (I could spin it). The jeweler told me the same thing, actually she shook it next to her ear to test it immediately. That is really the litmus test.

I think it's great that you went to another jewelry for an opinion. Surely it saved you a lot of heartache.

I've lost marquis' from my wrap several times (I'm a bit of a tomboy) and the jeweler who sold my ring must have gotten fed up with me such that the last time I turned my ring in for the marquis replacement, they kept it for 6 months! Then, when I got it back, it looked like they wanted to make sure I would never lose my marquis again and drowned it in gold, so the shape of the flower/leaf pattern on my wrap looked horrible!

That was the last time I ever went to their shop. I took it, on recommendation from a friend, to her jeweler and they fixed the marquis setting so it looks like a leaf again. Not to mention, they talked to me about my 4 prong setting and were able to convert to a 6 prong setting to add more security to my ring. That's something the other jewelry *never* talked to me about.

So that convinced me that it's definitely worth it to talk to another jeweler if you're unsure about your own.
