The Archewell Foundation is proud to congratulate this year’s recipient of the NAACP – Archewell Foundation Digital Civil Rights Award, Dr. Joy Buolamwini.

Dr. Joy is a computer scientist, digital activist and founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, an organization leading the way to overcome racist and sexist biases in artificial intelligence systems. In her book, “Unmasking AI,” she examines the social implications of technology and discusses the movement to prevent AI harms. As the recipient of this award, she will receive a grant of $100,000 to advance her work in supporting equity and accountability in AI.

Launched in 2022, this annual award uplifts a new generation of leaders who are creating transformational change and working to advance civil rights through the online world.

“I am incredibly humbled and honored to join such an illustrious group of receipts for the Digital Civil Rights Award from the NAACP and The Archewell Foundation,” said Dr. Joy Buolamwini. “With the rapid proliferation of AI, it is more crucial than ever to ensure that these algorithms acting as gatekeepers serve us all and do not impede on the civil rights of marginalized communities. This award will help the Algorithmic Justice League continue our work to prevent AI harms, connect the excoded to resources and raise awareness about AI’s impact on society through our advocacy, art and research.”

On Thursday, March 21st, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex hosted a special event in honor of The Kinsey African American Art and History Collection – the largest private holding of African American art and artifacts. The illustrious Collection, which first debuted at SoFi Stadium at Hollywood Park during Super Bowl LVI in 2022, tells the powerful and poignant story of Black history, spanning centuries of resilience, creativity, and triumph. The evening was brought together through a partnership between The Archewell Foundation and The Bernard and Shirley Kinsey Foundation for Art and Education.

Both organizations share a deep commitment to uplifting communities and were honored to share more about this groundbreaking collection and legacy of work with guests. The evening, which featured a tour of the exhibit and an intimate conversation with the Kinsey family, served not only as an enlightening experience but also as a catalyst for unity among attendees. It illuminated the rich tapestry of stories that make up our collective past and prompted a collective reflection on the importance of acknowledging and celebrating these narratives. The event is a testament to the vital role of cultural preservation in fostering a deeper understanding and connection within our communities.

The Kinsey Collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive private collections of African American art and historical artifacts in the world – containing rare and important primary source items, from 1595 to present day, and fine art by an array of seminal artists including Jacob Lawrence, Alma Thomas, Ernie Barnes, Bisa Butler and many more. The award-winning collection is currently on view at the Holocaust Museum Houston through June 2024.
